I have been working at Montclair State

    Pros

Great compensation for adjuncts to work.

    Cons

None, as it is a great place to work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Great job making adjuncts feel like part of the team

I have been working at Montclair State part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Summer Fridays off, long Christmas break, nice campus

    Cons

Seems to be in a time warp. Old, stodgy atmosphere. Shady undertones... not always honest in practice... under-performing employees are tolerated... obviously in an attempt to save salary and benefits $ they give jobs to students that more experienced, polished individuals should be doing... morale is low.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't think it would help. Sorry.

I have been working at Montclair State full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

There are great students and wonderful faculty at MSU.

    Cons

senior management creates dysfunctional work environment as evidenced by high turnover rate in staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

MSU seems to pride itself on being "a tough place to work." Quote comes directly from a VP. Senior Management has the power/responsibility to change the work environment to be more productive, collegial, and to eliminate institutional silos.

I worked at Montclair State as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

Wonderful/friendly campus setting, easy to make strong ties across departments. Easy public transportation options. Excellent downtown area nearby. Great work-life balance, with abundant vacation days/Fridays off in summer.

    Cons

The obsession with vast layers of hierarchy and reports led to complete circumnavigation of it - to merely complete a project. Zero autonomy; overbearing micro-management. Maddening review process, often followed by finger-pointing and blame games. Lack of ownership ran amuck. Unreasonable goals and behaviors are the norm.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire more do-ers than paper-shuffling, middling middle managers. Also - it's Montclair State, not Princeton - relax the M.O. a bit.
