Loved MVA but be careful which group you're in

I worked at Moore & Van Allen full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Great firm to work for. I loved the first practice group I was in. They were always encouraging and taught me a lot. Most days, I actually looked forward coming to work until I changed practice groups (big mistake). The benefits MVA offers are also great.

    Cons

Some practice groups have trouble keeping staff and nothing is being done about that problem. Some of these groups also claim to be drama free but are not. I fell victim to one of these "drama free" practice groups and was unfortunately let go.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the problems the staff are having and try to mediate instead of firing them and instead of chastising the people who are victims of drama, handle the people who are creating it.

    Pros

It's a good group of people that care that work hard.

    Cons

The hours are quite long, but then again, where aren't the hours long?

I worked at Moore & Van Allen

    Pros

They pay well. In fact, they pay better than comparable Charlotte firms.

    Cons

Somewhat sexist. No transparency in the hiring and promotion process.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let people know early where they stand in the hiring and promotion process. Make the organizational less of a good ol' boy's club.

I worked at Moore & Van Allen full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Depending on which attorney you worked for you either had a great work experience of a horrible one. The pay was good and they offered an excellent benefit package.

    Cons

Paralegals, who are required to bill certain hours should not be forced to punch a time clock. They do a lot of the grunt work for very little recognition and do not have a voice. The HR people don't have a clue of how each department works but are always offering up their opinions on how to fix things. The company also is not as diverse as they like to proclaim.

I worked at Moore & Van Allen

    Pros

    Community participation encouraged
Great benefit options and helpful HR department
Some great people to work with.

    Cons

Practice leaders only concerned with billable hours and not necessarily providing exceptional client service
New hires and promotions highly politicized
Non-legal staff overlooked for the amount of revenue generated for the firm

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop new employee evaluation system for non-legal staff - have quarterly assessments with upper management instead of 10 minute annual session with HR. Plenty of talent within the company that is not utilized because they do not have law degree and do not wish to become an attorney.
