Smart People, Lack Ambition

Financial Analyst (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at Morgan Stanley as an intern for more than a year

ProsGreat work/life balance in the finance division, plenty of very smart people, lots of professional development opportunities

ConsLacks mobility opportunity, people are a bit "comfortable" (take long lunches, leave at 6 on the dot), pay could also be better

Advice to Senior ManagementGive employees a chance to move around more and explore what works for their career (and hopefully add value to the firm, albeit in another area potentially)...or they WILL leave.

Excellent financial firm to work for

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at Morgan Stanley full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGreat IT department to work for, challenging work all around. I've been in the financial industry for over a decade and can tell from colleagues that this is a very strong environment to work in. Offices in Manhattan are very nice (with some getting recent upgrades!), and technology is kept as up-to-date as possible. Staff collaborates very well.

ConsWork/Life balance is tough, but if you enjoy doing the work and enjoy the people you work with, you can manage it.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Wealth Management -- Financial Adviser Associate

Financial Advisor (Former Employee)
Chicago, IL

I worked at Morgan Stanley full-time for more than a year

ProsGreat training, unlimited resources, free reign to build your book

ConsName recognition a detriment with accounts under $1M, you must build your book fast and you must have a huge pipeline ready to drop before your production date.

If you fail out it's because you underestimated client acquisition and the sales cycle.

– I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Good place to work with a diverse environment.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Morgan Stanley

ProsEqual opportunity to advance and move to different areas of the firm if you have the ambition to do so. Company is forward thinking in terms of IT and becoming a more green organization. Diverse work culture with people from many different backgrounds.

ConsManagement seems to stifle employees at times when trying to implement their initiatives without considering the effects to employees downstream. Multiple re-organization efforts put into effect and far too often.
