I worked at Morgan Stanley Investment Management part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Management is great, a lot to learn here. Fast pace work environment but it was rewarding.
management is very fair and is willing to listen if you have an issue.

    Cons

extensive training, but it being a financial services company that is expected. Although you are expected to do the training and take exams afterwards while also doing your daily work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

have new employees do the training BEFORE they start working. it is pointless to have the employees do the training while doing other work. this was counter productive as you are only paying attention to one thing at a time but doing two things.

I worked at Morgan Stanley Investment Management

    Pros

well run equity business, fixed income is a huge drag.

    Cons

all the disadvantages of working for a large regulated bank without any of the benefits. The retail business won't/can't distribute your product and the people in asset raising have no real story to sell.

I worked at Morgan Stanley Investment Management full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The charitable gifting employee match program is peerless. You can give to any 503c right off your pay stub and the company will match.

    Cons

Bully, thug culture. My boss actually called me to brag about firing another employee as if to say this could happen to you. The whole place lost the sense of logic and reason at Smith Barney in favor of rigid obedience to hierarchy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You can not give advice to those who are convinced they no it all. But that the wire houses all copy each other and have lost a near complete hold of the wealth management market in the 1980's to now only 35%.

I have been working at Morgan Stanley Investment Management

    Pros

There was good pay and an exciting environment for finance. Expectations of what was to be done were very clear.

    Cons

There was a very drab office culture -- however, I am comparing the finance world with the culture of subsequent jobs in tech in Silicon Valley.

  10.

Rudderless ship a drift and horrible culture to boot

I worked at Morgan Stanley Investment Management

    Pros

Scale, smart fellow employees and good location in NYC

    Cons

PM's are unchecked and senior management has no idea how to run asset management company. Compliance, investment in IT and people, compliance, risk and culture is not in the even part of the discussion. Believe they are a boutique IM firm, but offer mediocre at best value and performance and most of business is intermediary although they lead you to believe they are institutional. goes to show how little senior management actually knows about business.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Only way to grow firm and gain necessary control is to fire PM's, hire a CIO and look for some experienced asset management leaders.

I worked at Morgan Stanley Investment Management as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Friendly environment, kitchen with coffee and tea, arrived in the morning and typically left around 5, willing to show and teach you

    Cons

none that I can think of other than the compensation not being the highest but I was in it more for the experience than to make money
