I worked at Morgan Stanley Investment Management full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

I can only speak for the Fresno office, as I can almost certainly say that each individual office in varying cities will have different "vibes". Absolutely top-notch trading platforms and industry-leading portfolio options. Management was hands-off and allowed me to do my job the way I was most comfortable. Kind, healthy work environment- a very positive, balanced culture, as well. Senior brokers were willing and eager to help when questions arose.

    Cons

You must pass your Series 7 on the first attempt. I did. You must pass your Series 66 by second attempt. This is where i failed. I can't blame anyone but myself. I will say this: The STC training software that prepares you for the exam is markedly different in terms of quality when comparing the Series 7 and 66 study materials. I wish there were more "on-demand" or live classes to keep me engaged. Once you pass the "7", your brain is fried... but you still have more to do!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look in to updating the training software for Series 66

    Pros

Great opportunity to gain experience and take on responsibility quickly.

    Cons

Political and management is too top down focused.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen more to the people on the ground.

I have been working at Morgan Stanley Investment Management

    Pros

Company name recognition and friendships developed over the long-term have been appreciated

    Cons

Office culture, work/life balance, internal management shifts every 2-3 years and nepotism are a challenge

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize the value of institutional knowledge and experience in your long-term employees and create definitive career paths to stem high turnover in key areas.

I worked at Morgan Stanley Investment Management

    Pros

well run equity business, fixed income is a huge drag.

    Cons

all the disadvantages of working for a large regulated bank without any of the benefits. The retail business won't/can't distribute your product and the people in asset raising have no real story to sell.

I worked at Morgan Stanley Investment Management part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Management is great, a lot to learn here. Fast pace work environment but it was rewarding.
management is very fair and is willing to listen if you have an issue.

    Cons

extensive training, but it being a financial services company that is expected. Although you are expected to do the training and take exams afterwards while also doing your daily work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

have new employees do the training BEFORE they start working. it is pointless to have the employees do the training while doing other work. this was counter productive as you are only paying attention to one thing at a time but doing two things.

    Pros

The charitable gifting employee match program is peerless. You can give to any 503c right off your pay stub and the company will match.

    Cons

Bully, thug culture. My boss actually called me to brag about firing another employee as if to say this could happen to you. The whole place lost the sense of logic and reason at Smith Barney in favor of rigid obedience to hierarchy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You can not give advice to those who are convinced they no it all. But that the wire houses all copy each other and have lost a near complete hold of the wealth management market in the 1980's to now only 35%.

I have been working at Morgan Stanley Investment Management

    Pros

There was good pay and an exciting environment for finance. Expectations of what was to be done were very clear.

    Cons

There was a very drab office culture -- however, I am comparing the finance world with the culture of subsequent jobs in tech in Silicon Valley.
