I have been working at Morgan Stanley Investment Management

    Pros

There was good pay and an exciting environment for finance. Expectations of what was to be done were very clear.

    Cons

There was a very drab office culture -- however, I am comparing the finance world with the culture of subsequent jobs in tech in Silicon Valley.

I worked at Morgan Stanley Investment Management

    Pros

Scale, smart fellow employees and good location in NYC

    Cons

PM's are unchecked and senior management has no idea how to run asset management company. Compliance, investment in IT and people, compliance, risk and culture is not in the even part of the discussion. Believe they are a boutique IM firm, but offer mediocre at best value and performance and most of business is intermediary although they lead you to believe they are institutional. goes to show how little senior management actually knows about business.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Only way to grow firm and gain necessary control is to fire PM's, hire a CIO and look for some experienced asset management leaders.

Friendly environment, kitchen with coffee and tea, arrived in the morning and typically left around 5, willing to show and teach you

    Cons

none that I can think of other than the compensation not being the highest but I was in it more for the experience than to make money

I have been working at Morgan Stanley Investment Management full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Beautiful offices, state-of-the-art technology, and access to highly-regarded thought leaders in the industry

    Cons

If you're on the sales side, there is a lot of sales pressure. You receive a low salary for the first 18 months and then your salary decreases by 30 percent. It continues to decrease until you're on straight commission. Don't expect a lot of work/life balance. New Financial Advisors are expected to work long hours six days a week.
