I have been working at Morgan Stanley full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

-Work life balance is great, I can work from home as much as I want and the schedule is super flexible. I worked from across the country for multi-week and will work from abroad for a month soon.
-My immediate manager are great and always fighting for their colleague
-Good perks (RRSP matching, gym membership, etc...)
-Excellent graduate program where you spend 4 months in NYC to learn more about technology with pretty much all-expense paid

    Cons

-Even though my team use recent technology and that my direct managers are really great technologist, it is obvious that most other team spend most of their time supporting old software on old stack.
-Difficult to get a raise since 2008 even though the company make more and more money
    -

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Salary is pretty much what you would expect at the start but it would be easier to give raise and retain more people.

I worked at Morgan Stanley as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

The contract rate was good but with the long hours it doesn't work out to be any better that at other companies with a sane work week.

    Cons

No work-life balance and they don't really care. They expect you to work 7 days a week, 5 full time week days + partial on Sat and Sun so essentially you are tied to you job all the time. No desire to build tools to automate repetitive task to allow people to be more "productive".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider how they use people and treat them better

I have been working at Morgan Stanley full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    - great it teams
    - good and great challenges
    - some nice developers to work and share the ideas with
    - good medical compensation and good , competitive salaries for the new employee
    - overall good place
    - work from home

    Cons

    - too much management decision starting from ED level and above.
    - when the time of compensation comes, all the reviews during the year and projects that you work do not reflect the reality on the compensation.
    - if you find some interesting project in the company you would like to work on, you cannot because you are not on certain positions (e.g. VP) so you cannot apply even if you are entitled to work there

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

the management should listen to the low level ppl without having the air of superior because it is proven that they survive because of ppl from the lower position

I have been working at Morgan Stanley as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Allows use of open source, people are generally nice, lot of smart people here, some really tight code here. You are bound to learn something here.

    Cons

It is sink or swim here. Typical financial industry culture of people not (wanting to) be of much help, people are too busy to help and mostly about covering their own backside. Not much opportunity(read time) to learn anything here, usually will get stuck with busy work. Nothing documented, no formal training, kind of figure it out yourself mantra from management. Most of the people here complain of the same thing, they don't know what they are doing. It feels like you're working in the dark, simple tasks take much longer and are painful to get done. You will keep asking yourself, do I still want to show up to work here? Montreal is run-down, pot-hole, cracked sidewalks, high taxes, high gas, rent can be high, stores close early 5pm - 6pm even on weekend!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take care of your resource before they takecare of themselve and look elsewhere to be more productive.
