I worked at Morgan Stanley full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Smart people, competitive products and great brand. A lot of work hard, play hard.

    Cons

More and more office politics and micro managing. Compensation not as competitive as it once was.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Needs better risk management.

I have been working at Morgan Stanley as an intern (more than a year)

    Pros

Great name to have on your resume for future recruiting purposes. I was lucky to get hired by a friendly team and my managing partner is very attentive and caring. It varies across the board though and some people in the office barely greet you when they pass you in the hallway.

    Cons

Low compensation, that's really the only con.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Overall, MS cares a lot about their staff and interns. However, since the company has many Manhattan locations, it's hard to get a feel for other divisions other than those in your physical proximity.

I have been working at Morgan Stanley full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Opportunities for development and increased responsibility; generous benefits, company standards of excellence and respect; diverse work projects and continual opportunities to learn; team mentality, well organized interdisciplinary working groups; great commitment to diversity and inclusion; and to giving back to community; Legal department has promoted non-lawyers to officer level positions.

    Cons

Compensation is not keeping up with comparable businesses in banking community - this has been representative of the post 2008 environment of the firm; changes in upper management more frequent; teams are so lean that workload is generally highly stressful; but still enjoyable if you are fortunate enough to be part of a caring, well managed team.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize and appreciate the contributions of all levels of employees to the company; not just those at the very top. Have the comp structure be more reflective of that concept.

    Pros

Pay is competitive amongst other banks/dealers on the street. You are also surrounded by a team of professionals whom you can learn and engage with.

    Cons

Bonus is not as high as mentioned when hired. Management does not care about your development within the team or firm.

I worked at Morgan Stanley as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Great company recognition on resume and overall a very positive experience. The firm is really turning around and evolving into a great place to work and to invest in.

    Cons

Internal systems were extremely outdated and so specific to the firm that many of the skills were not transferable as an intern. Middle management teams do not have a team mentality. All work is given to juniors while middle management travels.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

be completely honest during the hiring process what your position entails and what it does not involve

Great opportunities to advance and very intelligent coworkers. Always something to do. Management is very friendly and helpful. Very supportive atmosphere to work in.

    Cons

I worked at Morgan Stanley full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Managers expect hard work but do encourage career development and recognize merit for promotions. Great coworkers foster a positive environment of camaraderie. Good opportunities to move within the firm, even to different (global) locations. Favorite perk - free or discounted access to most museums in NYC.

    Cons

Not the best place if you are looking for work-life balance or job security, but then again, that's most of the banks. Computer systems were outdated and buggy. Times Sq location has too many tourists.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat employees with respect and they will work harder for you.

I have been working at Morgan Stanley full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

It does present opportunities but give little reward for efforts. Good place to develop skills then move on. Of course some teams are lead by good managers but many are not. You are respected for following orders and never questioning management.

    Cons

Practically no training offered, management is often unavailable and provides little guidance. You are required to be self manage and self motivate. Manager often have little understanding of what they are supervised and no incentive to develop.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I wish senior management focused on more valued added decisions instead of actions that have been given little thought and analysis. In the effort to do everything, no time real time is spent trying to accomplish something of value. I am disappointed in the management team overall and see nothing to change it. We tell ourselves everything is great and rather believe it then look at things more closely.
