Good company with benefits and modest salaries for the city

IT_ (Former Employee)
London, England (UK)

I worked at Morgan Stanley full-time for more than 5 years

ProsRelaxed culture. Good opportunity to learn. Good people.

ConsLower end salaries for investment banking.

Advice to Senior ManagementPay more to attract the best people. Fire bad people. Streamline the IT department. Top heavy management structure with strategies that are out of touch with reality. It is an anti-startup culture.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Hard work to build a career

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
London, England (UK)

I have been working at Morgan Stanley full-time

Pros-colleagues are smart and prepared, learning possibilities are numerous
-great place to start a career and build your network
-intellectual challenges abound
-good salary and benefits, possibility for career improvement and higher responsibilities come quicker for top performers

Cons-long hours, not the environment it used to be (for better and for worse)
-some divisions are very hierarchical, junior employees work on repetitive tasks
-losing the edge versus alternative jobs in the market (outside IB), both in terms of prestige/pay/influence

Fundamentally a good place to work but the last few years have taken their toll.

Vice President (Former Employee)

I worked at Morgan Stanley full-time for more than 8 years

ProsThere are lots of smart people there who you can learn a lot from.
Most teams have a flexible adult approach to working.
It is a Great place to learn and grow and there are can be opportunities to advance.
Still lots of people there who genuinely care about doing a good job.

ConsYou have to quit to get a pay rise or sometimes force their hand to advance your career.
The place is full of politicians these days, probably no worse than any other bank but it wasn't like this in the past.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf I thought management would have every listened to my advice I wouldn't have quit!

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

ProsPlenty of smart people that have been around the company for a long time, so you can leverage their experience to learn how to navigate the firm.

ConsLot of people that have been around the company for a long time, including many that have a lot of experience but tend not to use it well or share it with others.

Advice to Senior ManagementChurn some of the dead wood and look to the outside for different viewpoints.
