    Pros

Congenial work atmosphere, professional, flexible, diverse, competitive salary Good conflict resolution. Comfortable work environment and attention to individual worker needs Excellent training and staff support.

    Cons

Same as any large firm except to a lesser degree. Better transparency on strategic staffing decisions with more opportunities/support for those who may be laid off.

    Advice to Management

More communication with employees on day to day operations and efficiency. More opportunities for older workers. Continued emphasis on training and skills upgrades.

    Cons

Everyone is out to get everyone. - while at MoFo. all I experienced lack of team spirit, sure they all work together but if not for a second expect that anyone in team will have your best interest at hand. not even managers.

    Pros

Substantive work for a summer associate, and very approachable attorneys.

    Cons

Like all BigLaw, it seemed as though the associates worked very long hours.

    Pros

Informal atmosphere. Good benefits. Snacks on Fridays.

    Cons

The firm hired external staff managers about 2 years ago, some with no law-firm background, and began shifting to a more "corporate" management style. There were severe layoffs with no warning, and continual attrition since then. Staff management are aloof and seemingly ignorant of the details of staff work or the policies they themselves impose, and the work environment for non-exempt staff has become overtly adversarial and hostile. Raises are kept to a fraction of a percent (seriously, like 2/10ths of one percent) above inflation, with a minimal bonus tossed in as a sop, but basically you will never improve your income in real terms. It has been announced that staffing ratios (how many attorneys each secretary is expected to serve) will be incrementally increased in coming years with no compensation. Staff are also continually required to learn new software packages to take on extra duties - billing, making travel reservations directly (not through an agency), expense accounting - that were formerly not secretarial responsibilities, again with no extra compensation and in addition to the increased workload. Support staff - wordprocessing, mailroom, pantry - were outsourced, some after close to 20 years of service. Staff managers are dishonest and manipulative. Morale has plummeted under the new system.

    Advice to Management

Walk your talk. MoFo brags about its personable culture and the "MoFo family," but that applies only to attorneys. The staff are increasingly treated as negligible and dismissable. After taking in record gross revenues of over $1 billion in 2012, you announced there would be no real-dollar staff raises because the firm couldn't afford it. Don't hide behind your hired hatchet people: cop to the fact that you are abusing your staff and creating job insecurity as a way of manipulating people and keeping salaries down. Either stop that and make amends, or cut the "MoFo family" [huh - I'm not allowed to use the word that describes your behavior] and admit you're just another corporate machine grinding people down for your own benefit.

    Pros

The firm prides itself in quality legal work and strong support for diversity in its workforce. It has one of the highest percentage of women lawyers among major international law firms.

    Cons

The workload can be onerous at times, but that is true of every one of its major competitiors. Most partners are supportive, but some can be difficult.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the excellent support of your younger lawyers and staff.

    Pros

Lots of resources, plenty of high profile work, interesting clients, opportunities to do pro bono work, a commitment to some level of pro bono for each lawyer.

    Cons

Career path can be unpredictable and sometimes out of the hands of the associate for the most part. MoFo will put associates where they are needed, often with little regard for associates' preferences.

    Advice to Management

Push down more responsibility to lower level associates.

    Pros

MoFo Palo Alto has (mostly) really nice people who are smart lawyers. Most lawyers in the office have families, so there is some flexibility re face time, especially if you have family matters to tend to (e.g. picking up child after day care).

    Cons

MoFo Palo Alto does not stand on its own two feet. If you go there as an associate, you will only survive long-term by getting to know and work with partners in SF and NY. The partners in Palo Alto do not generally bring in their own matters. As a result, as a senior associate, you will be competing with the office's junior partners for work on rain maker cases out of the big offices. And guess who will be at a disadvantage there? So if you go there - make it a point from day one to work extensively with SF/NY partners. And beware the up or out policy. If you do not work with big-office partners, your reviews after you become a seventh year will sudden;y turn from glowing to problematic. Then you will be asked to leave. To be fair, they give the softest soft landing you can imagine (six months with full pay but no duties). But I'd say the better course of action is to go to this offer for your first few years, then lateral.

    Advice to Management

Ditch the up or out policy.

    Pros

Very nurturing and friendly, hip environment.

    Cons

People are very busy and are supportive, so sometimes you need to be quite independent (which can be a very good thing)
