I have been working at Mother's Market part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Great management
    Great employees
    Discounts on food
Flexible scheduling for time off requests/scheduling
Benefits offered even for part-time employees
    Casual dresscode

    Cons

Pay ($10 per hour) but that is pretty typical of industry
Back of the house/front of the house divide: When I first started working there (back of the house) there was a noticeable attitude difference between people who worked on the floor/cashiers towards anyone who worked in the back. Kinda hilarious, since they make about a $1 or $2 more than we do, but whatever. The people in the back are more chill anyway, so it doesn't bother me.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Maybe training. If a few key employees are out sick, some processes fall apart. Other than that, great management team and great company.

    Cons

Lack of structure, unethical favoritism, poor management, customers are stuck up.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take better care of your employees and have an open mind. Could improve high turn over rate.

    Pros

Pros are that they have a flexible schedule for those in school, they basically have no dress code and the only dress code is wear work appropriate clothes, and the work environment is a casual environment

    Cons

some of the cons of working at mother's market and kitchen are the fact that there is little structure, the customers are all stuck up and the pay is small.

I have been working at Mother's Market full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great employees. You get a decent discount on most products in the store. Reasonable holiday bonus and birthday bonus. They like to promote from within the company.

    Cons

The pay rate is much less than at other health food stores. Also, management at some of the stores seem to have constant problems. Some of the customers need special attention which can get annoying.

I worked at Mother's Market part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The energy that you feel working at a place like Mother's is unmeasurable. The people you will work with become instant friends, the managers seem to really care about every employee. The customers... well yes, specialty foods mean people with extra special needs... demanding people. But there are enough good people who come in and teach you thinks about health and nutrition to make it worth it.

    Cons

Management needs more help. They are trying but there are some issues with communication. Occasionally a coworkers would get so fed-up they would just flake out on work and leaving those working stranded, understaffed and the managers scrambling to cover. When you work in foodservice, you need people who are specifically trained. So if you're having a manager come in to cover someone who calls out, the manager needs to know how everything works in each department of the store.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please learn how to work in the deli and the restaurant. We are always short there and it's a nightmare for anyone working in those departments. The deli NEEDS HELP. Please don't make the manager suffer alone and frustrated because she signed up for that job.

    I worked at Mother's Market

    Pros

You get a 10% discount on groceries, a 20% discount on body care and vitamins. You get a "birthday bonus" and "holiday gift." They have set schedules with mainly 8 hour shifts which makes it an easy job to plan around.

    Cons

There is a wage freeze, no one is getting a raise. The management gets upset whenever employees use the bathroom. If you don't have a receipt while you're eating you will automatically be fired. The machines are old and will break down during your shift, multiple times. The wind blows through the front end, and if you have allergies it's not a good job for you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When you get caught up in nit-picking employees instead of rewarding them for what they're doing right you create a hostile work environment. If you don't take away the wage freeze you are going to lose a lot of great employees and be stuck constantly training new people who are going to leave with the product knowledge to somewhere that will pay them more. Mother's has built a great brand in orange county, but the business won't continue to grow if you lose sight of the morals that got you here in the first place.

I have been working at Mother's Market

    Pros

Not Whole Foods. Company supports small companies. Lots of unique products. Customers love the store. Company has great values and ethics.

    Cons

Pay not always competitive. Currently there is a wage freeze due to economy. Don't always get feedback from managers. Training is lacking at times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Great company. Need to pay your employees better wages. You have good people working for you. Recognize them more often.
