Pros
The pay remains above average for the industry but this is sliding. Tools and equipment to do your job is great!
Cons
Extremely Poor Middle Management (massive good-ole-boy network)! Too many managers! Very Arragant Culture! Management will through employees under-the-bus quickly to help there position with the big boss or peers.
When you have senior level managers telling engineering where to put chamfers on parts, you know that company is in real trouble! This is no joke!
Advice to Senior Management
Need to check Ego's at door and make sure this trickles down! Literally Fire (layoff) most all the Middle managment people.
Pros
1. Looks good on a resume
2. Can learn on the job (assuming that they will pick up the bill - apparently, it is a "perk" and not all mangers will provide necessary training)
Cons
EVERYTHING. Benefits suck, no recognition for work done
1. Cheap - most managers are worried about their budget, and the only ones that suffer are the employees
2. High attrition rate - people are beginning to leave, one by one and then in droves. Motorola will cease to exist soon, only as a government entity
3. More concernd with schedule than quality. Pick up a MOT phone and compare it to a Blackberry, iPhone or any Samsung / LG phone - noticeable difference in quality (although HW quality is good)
Advice to Senior Management
PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR EMPLOYEES
Pros
Motorola has a strong history of innovation and respect for employees. The company invests in employees through training & career growth. They have a strong product portfolio which consists of much more than the troubled cell phone division. Excellent diversity program. Global presence and strong worldwide brand. Motorola has the capability to provide integrated communication & data management solutions to governments & industries.
Cons
Recent layoffs. Cell phone business sells are down and major restructuring in progress. Company seems to be having an identity crisis, internally and on the street. If you're not comfortable with change, then this may not be the organization for you.
Advice to Senior Management
Focus on the core business. Change the common perception that Motorola is a "cell phone" company. Emphasize that Motorola is an integrated solution provider which can enable governments, industries & bsuinesses to operate efficient and seamlessly.
Pros
get some experience under my belt
Cons
RPA (relative performance assessment) led to non-cooperation between teams.
People being promoted for the wrong reason i.e. six sigma nonsense.
stupid initiatives that waist time - white belt, time sheets
Advice to Senior Management
leave
Pros
You are able to work with high tech technology. In addition to this, the compensation is very good. Moreover, the brand name remains strong. Also, there are still many senior engineers that are there to mentor the younger engineers. They used to have a great 401k/pension plan. Engineers are able to focus on engineering and not the business aspect of the company. The facilities are kept clean and the lunch food is good. Also, many of the senior managers eat lunch in the cafeteria so you have an opportunity to pitch your elevator speech if you have one to give.
Cons
The company is not growing, therefore job promotion is limited. In addition to this, many people are concerned with losing their job so it is not a fun environment to work in. Moreover, many people will be inclined to not help you in your job because they are also worried about losing their jobs. The cube sizes have become much smaller and the management does not lead by example. Few people in upper management have engineering degrees so they do not have the entire respect of the company. Other than this, Motorola is an alright company to be an employee of.
Advice to Senior Management
They need to realize that older engineers are what spearheaded innovation. Firing them, was not a good decision.
Pros
Good engineering company. This is a company that prides in doing a solution end to end by itself. So, it is a good engineering company.
Cons
The pride in doing everything itself is also the downfall of Motorola. It does not make sense to make everything itself, but recognize where to spend money in, For example, making cellphones again and again, is not value added, but adding features, services, applications is. The company fails to see the big picture.
Advice to Senior Management
Wear a bigger hat, think outside the box. Look at your competitors, and wake up every morning with an intention of beating the competition.
Pros
Huge corporate company, with many centers of excellence and dedicated, long-serving middle management. Benefits are very much in line with Fortune 500 companies and in some cases are more generous. Time off policy is better than at other companies.
Cons
There is a lot more work to be done that can actually be accomplished - shortly after joining, my role was expanded to include the responsibilities of someone who was leaving the team. Senior management decisions affect business directly even though they are sometimes disconnected with reality. There are many blind spots within the company that are not taken care of correctly.
Advice to Senior Management
Senior management has their hands tied up with the Mobile Devices mess, neglecting profitable, quasi-monopoly business that Motorola has in Government & Public Safety. Many wrong decisions made in that area will prevent the business from reaching its full potential in the short to mid-term, but it is still not too late to turn back and give more attention (and money) to that part of the business.
Pros
I can't think of any. It's paying the mortgage. I'd be at RIMM right now if Motorola didn't sue them for "poaching" employees . (Verified in Chicago business news).
Cons
Incompetent micromanagement. Once an amazing workplace, they've cut staff, benefits, and schedules. Schedules are arbitrary with no input from the engineers. Management has all the answers. Engineers are ditchdiggers to "get the job done". They rarely praise you but will cut your head off if you bring bad news. Personal life suffers severely at Motorola. Favoritism in the management ranks makes it difficult for unconnected talent to advance. Bottom line, bottom line, bottom line. That's all it's about. Employee's well being doesn't show up in the ledger so, why care?
Advice to Senior Management
For once in your lives listen to your technical staff. And stop turning Motorola into a sweatshop. Why do 7 of 9 VP's, including the CEO lack a technical degree?
Pros
opportunity to grow internally to expand your knowledge. Very helpful employees in regards of knowledge sharing
Cons
Poor management brings employee moral down and hard working people do not get rewarded there are lots of politics going on in pretty much all departments so you can be lucky if you get promotion without knowing upper managent.
Advice to Senior Management
Recognize your talent
Pros
It was a great place to begin my career and have opportunities to learn and grow. A lot of very talented engineers who were always willing to see you succeed.
Cons
Executive leadership led us into terrible condition, now they spend more time trying to get out of a bad shape instead of strengthening themselves for the future
Advice to Senior Management
Stop flooding the marketplace with 60 products on the roadmap per year. Concentrate your engineering resources to reduce the number of hardware platforms and focus your SW efforts on more than just making the hardware work. The UI is not compelling, usability is nothing special, and there is no WOW factor.
