Motorola Mobility is in disarray.

Senior Software Engineer (Former Employee)
Libertyville, IL

I worked at Motorola Mobility full-time for more than 10 years

ProsUsed to be the best cell phone company to work for. 100% Android products. Good brand and reputation. If you find the right group within, you could be set. Very interesting, challenging work. Incredibly intelligent, dedicated people to work with.

ConsLayoff after layoff after layoff. Corporate split from the main Motorola, then buyout, then sell-off - all cons from the employee's perspective (big shareholders could potentially disagree). Selling the nice suburban owned campus, and renting space in downtown Chicago, forcing settled employees to commute over an hour each way. Motorola Mobility has become the ugly stepchild of the mobile industry. Hopefully Lenovo can keep the name alive.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Hero zero in less than 10 months flat

IT Manager (Former Employee)

I worked at Motorola Mobility full-time for more than 5 years

ProsNone that I can think of, other than Lenovo will be putting the company out of its misery.

ConsCompany has no clue how to make a successful product any longer, nor has it made a profit in years.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake sure that your resumes are current.

I worked at Motorola Mobility full-time for more than a year

ProsNice intelligent people. Interesting industry. Fast moving so that there can be opportunities to get involved in multiple things. Pay and benefits were good.

ConsAlways waiting for the next restructuring. Mobility employees became second class citizens within the Google family after the acquisition. Not that Google did much better with the company, and now they sold it to Lenovo.

Advice to Senior ManagementWell...it has just been sold to Lenovo, but my advice would be to leverage Lenovo's scale to make Mobility a industry player again, instead of a has been.

Unstable; possibly dynamic - depends on the viewpoint

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Motorola Mobility for more than 5 years

ProsIntelligent employees with deep knowledge and experience; great marketing and desire for innovation; decent facility with good pay, benefits and work-life balance

ConsMultiple re-organizations (3 CEOs in 5 years) with quarterly layoffs had a detrimental effect on employee morale. Leadership vision and direction was in flux making it difficult for employees to fully engage and commit; disconnect between employees and Sr Management. Consistency and frequency of communications improved, though many great employees left or were laid off

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue communicating vision, mission, values and walk the talk. Engage with employees at every level

Has it pros and cons

Engineer (Current Employee)

I have been working at Motorola Mobility full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGreat ability to balance work and family. Competitive/above average salary. Many intelligent coworkers who are not hesitant to share the knowledge.

ConsThe company has been in chaos for past few years. Though still able to push out products, the constant layoffs, re-organization, trading of the company are very demoralizing for everyone. A lot of management that is, frankly, quite lost in the direction they want to take. The company is run to make money and save costs, the care for costumer falls second, though strives for the better are being made.

Advice to Senior ManagementMethodically let go of people who need to be let go instead of laying off people randomly. There are few layers of management that is simply not needed anymore.
