5-10 years ago it was a great place to work, it went downhill from there very fast

Senior Staff Engineer (Former Employee)
Schaumburg, IL

I worked at Motorola Mobility

Pros* very sharp people to work with
* flexible work environment
* very interesting work up until 2007 or so

Cons* extremely top heavy organization
* senior management is cluless about how to run a business; too many examples here- look no further than its lost leadership in an industry that it created-
* accomplishments not recognized

Advice to Senior Management* talk from time to time to real engineers and find out what's going on instead of relying on yes men that you usually surround yourself with
* embrace change, not fight it; learn to recognize game-changing events/technology

Abysmal

Network Monitoring (Current Employee)
Schaumburg, IL

I have been working at Motorola Mobility

ProsSteady paycheck. Reasonable benefits, including a credit union, 401k match, company stock purchase plan, medical, dental, vision. Decent front line employees.

ConsPoor morale, poor pay and benefits. No training. No support from IT or management. Ruling by fear and innuendo. If you prove yourself as a capable employee, you will be given more work and more responsibility without more pay. Management routinely will make public any kind of perceived shortcomings they see in employees. If any equipment breaks down, good luck getting it repaired or replaced. On separate occasions, a microwave oven and a refrigerator broke down. Management tried collecting money from the employees to replace both the microwave and the refrigerator. There is no consistent time-off policy, even within the workgroup. Some days, you just have to send an email to get the time approved. If you try leaving in the middle of your shift, even if you have an emergency, even if you have time off available, your manager will demand your badge.
No consistent measurement of employee performance. Most employee performance is based on subjective buzzwords like "flexibility" and "attitude." Translation: do what management wants whenever they want you to. Don't question the status quo, even if the status quo is terrible. Sit down, shut up, and be grateful to even have a job in a terrible economy.

Advice to Senior ManagementCut the fat. There are so many mid-level managers whose most lasting contributions are cleaning out the break room refrigerator or posting signs to clean the break room.

ProsGreat people, great products, and people in the line business are committed to success. Good sales teams and large share of the equipment business in key markets.

ConsPoor senior leadership, short term focused, lack the ability to articulate a vision and then deliver on that vision.

Advice to Senior ManagementBecome a wireless solutions company, and build a end to end solutions business. That means applications, consulting, and end to end integration services.

For a fortune 500 company, Motorola is not very exciting or inspiring to work for.

Senior Software Engineer (Former Employee)
Schaumburg, IL

I worked at Motorola Mobility

Pros- Work-life balance
- Casual environment, flexible timing
- Good amount of paid time off
- Good flexibility in terms of working from home
- Good arrangements for working mothers/parents and part-time students

Cons- Not enough opportunities to grow personally or professionally
- Good performance is only recognised when there is enough budget
- Senior management doesn't take any of the hit for their mistakes and bonuses of employees plummet

Advice to Senior Management- Listen to comments from employees at the lowest levels as well, as that is where the inspiration of the company lies
- Encourage new ideas from employees rather than competing by copying other companies

ProsMotorola Solutions has long and proud history of innovation in the public safety related communications products. The company has a great work culture. People have great respect for each other.

ConsCompany needs to accelerate innovation and promote more creativity from within. Complacency among some of its groups will be detrimental for the company. It needs to be much ahead of its competitors to retains its market share.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement needs to create new programs that encourages and promotes innovation in both business models as well as in grassroots technology.
