Working in mobile space is like "living in interesting times"
Pros
Great pay and benefits. Great people to work with.
Cons
Senior staff is more concerned with their piece of the pie
Advice to Senior Management
No advice. It's probably too late
Pros
Solid reputation. Smart people. Good pay.
Cons
Matrix. Top Heavy. No clear direction.
Advice to Senior Management
Set clear direction. Stop cost cutting.
Pros
For the most part, there is autonomous leadership. For the most part, the people at Motorola are good and decent people looking to do the right thing for the company.
Cons
The management team often makes decision to benefit their own personal silos instead of building collaboration across the company. They often will start and stop projects without thinking about the long term impacts. Incredibly frustrating to the teams working on those projects and no sense of long term strategy.
Advice to Senior Management
Identify a direction and lead the team down that direction. Adjust when the company needs long term strategic adjustment but don't sacrifice the long term direction just to meet the short term quarterly earnings.
Pros
Great people at Motorola. Engineers are encouraged to grow and develop their skills. Their compensation seems higher than the industry average. Committed to designing world class phones. Motorola products are some of the highest quality in the industry.
Cons
Work life balance can be bad at times. Engineers better be ready to hop on a plane to China at a moments notice. Motorola Mobility has reduced itself to a commodity company. They are just designing the "box". Android does the software that means they have control over the user experience. Anyone out their can design the hardware and in most cases do it faster and cheaper.
Advice to Senior Management
Look back to the IBM PC division. How long did they last when they let Microsoft do the software? IBM figured they could make the PC's better than anyone in the world. They never counted on the suppliers of the components and parts to be able to do it faster and cheaper. being number 5 in the industry does not give you access to the latest or best technologies.
Pros
* Pay is above average
* Not shy about sending associates to international locations to solve issues
* Well known name
Cons
* Late nights due to calls with Asia on issues
* Lots of nepotism seen in Supply Chain of Mobile Devices
* The usual inefficiencies you see at bureaucratic companies
Advice to Senior Management
Always push the envelope and never over focus on one product to the point that you miss the next big thing. It happened with the StarTec, then the RAZR and now a little with the DROID. Always look for the next best thing. Try to promote for the right reasons and not because someone is friends with the other person. Bring people from the outside, too many processes exist now as they did 25 years ago because people stay at MOT forever. Many good people end up leaving because the long timers control the mindset.
Pros
exciting, always changing work, cutting edge business, great products that are constantly in people's hands, good employees, great time off benefits, very skilled engineering environment
Cons
extremely competitive industry, always fears of layoffs, benefits continue to deteriorate, at times crazy schedules that require long hours, political.
Advice to Senior Management
Leadership needs to improve it's vision and direction. Less time spent on figuring out what to make, will help with having more time to make the product succeed in the market.
Pros
Motorola is all about cutting edge projects, bleeding edge technologies, overwhelming challenges, amazingly experienced engineering staff, and good benefits, comraderie and salary.
Cons
The internal competition and external competition in the marketplace can be intense; it's been that way since the beginning and shows no signs of stopping.
Advice to Senior Management
Motorola will not steadily improve until they appoint a new board of directors that will actually work for the common shareholders and stop rewarding management for making poor decisions.
Pros
Nice work environment and facilities. We learn a lot while working which enables us to work for higher level in the hierarchy.
Cons
Sometimes, few issues remain unsolved or are solved temporary in hurry at deadline. Hence, these issues reappear with major issue in future development.
Advice to Senior Management
Management is very good. They are very talented. They encourage juniors to work for higher hierarchy. In that, they help a lot.
