    Motorola Solutions, Loosing its edge???

I have been working at Motorola Solutions full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Motorola (now Motorola Solutions) is a world class technology company which has been the number one in its technology area in the US and worldwide for many years. It has stood for cutting edge technology combined with rock-solid performance for mission critical communications. It has been, in the past a great place to work. And the work made you feel great for the lives you saved every day.

    Cons

Current management seems to believe we can "shrink our way to greatness" a proposition I have seen disproved over and over. They pontificate "if everybody own it, nobody owns it" then begin homogenizing the various product lines into one big mish-mash, which "everybody" will own, forgetting what they just said. It is still a good place to work, but no longer a "safe" employer when they get the next "lay-off" bug under ther wigs. Oddly this last time they laid off young recent hires who were showing great promise for the future of the company, as well as more expensive "old timers" who are the institutional memory of the comapny. I believe they have emraced "change for the sake of change" forgetting Richard Demming's proofs that changing things "just because" always makes things worse. Fortunately, if I go in the next layoff I am at almost full retirement age, and in any case will be retiring before they have time to ruin a great comapany completely and make it "just another" company, though that is where they are headed. If you come to work here, don't plan on getting your 30 year or 40 year awards. Those are still being given out, but a lot of people coming up on them were laid off in three rounds in this last year. Still a better than average employer, as long as the job lasts.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get your heads screwed on tight. Most of you are a bunch of MBAs who couldn't do the "grunt" level work of this company, but you just get "management crazy". As I said above, Richar4d Demming , demigod of Quality proved to all engineers that changing things, without knowing exactly what and WHY you are making the change is always going to make any problem worse instead of better. You have decided to "CHANGE EVERYTHING" at once without any rhyme or reason in a lot of cases. All your business school graduates need to remember the old chestnut "those who can do, those who can't teach". Just because somebody told you "so-and-so" in grad school doesn't make it "so" in the real world.

A great place to work for a long time

    I worked at Motorola Solutions

    Pros

Flexible work schedules were fantastic. Generous bonus payouts for many years. Took care of long-term employees that were let go with a generous separations package.

    Cons

The drive to be innovative has left the building. Focus in recent years has been on the immediate bottom line and less about what the next big thing will be. By benchmarking other companies and aligning themselves with the all the others, Motorola has become just like everyone else.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Return to innovation. instead of trying to be like everyone else, try to be the one everyone else wants to be.

I have been working at Motorola Solutions (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Highly flexible schedule, good people to work with, autonomy when making decisions

    Cons

Company seems to be getting ready to sell, downsizing its R&D. Too fixed on radio solutions and not enough emphasis on software.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Weed out the higher ups who don't do anything. Bring incentives for software engineering which is going to be the heart of your company.

    Questionable Future...

Former Employee - Project Manager in Schaumburg, IL

I worked at Motorola Solutions full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Benefits are decent, but were seemingly chipped away year after year, no different than most companies I would assume. Accrued Paid Time Off (PTO) was good. Depending on your department and management, ability to work from home was a nice perk.

    Cons

Office culture based on fear and CYA as the company's fortunes dipped quarter after quarter, year after year. ZERO accountability for bad management; Many employees laid off would be honest in exit interviews regarding issues with lack of accountability in managers, and HR seemed to not give a damn, doing NOTHING to address issues brought up in exit interviews. "Old Boy" network of mid-managers who do everything to cover their own butts, which can often mean that yours is in a sling. I saw first hand a number of clueless managers who survived year after year of cutbacks & layoffs, and the question from colleagues and myself would inevitably be "They didn't let (insert name) go?!?!? How clueless are they?!?!"

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper Management is running around like chickens with their heads cut off chasing after the "numbers," and getting stuck in analysis paralysis. If Managment would take a step back, take a deep breath, and actively request and ACT on employee feedback, they might, MIGHT, be able to turn around what appears to many employees within to be a dying company breathing its last gasps...
