    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Mount Saint Mary College full-time

    Pros

There is a fantastic work/life balance in addition to schedule flexibility. The college also provides compensation for any major holiday that falls on regularly scheduled work days. Co-workers are genuinely interested in the well-being of one another, and always willing to help.

    Cons

Wage increases for non-salaried employees should be weighted by merit and productivity. Not all workers are created equal, and this warrants individual assessment. Furthermore, wage increases should be accessed to more adequately reflect the cost-of-living.

    Advice to Management

The service hours of some offices should be re-accessed to more adequately reflect student demand. It is wasteful for office spaces to remain powered/fully staffed when a lack of foot traffic by students does not necessitate it.

I have been working at Mount Saint Mary College full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

There are so many wonderful people here, and that makes it nice to come to work. People across all different areas of the college come together to collaborate on various projects and are always willing to help each other. The work can be demanding at times, but that is more than offset by the positives. The campus is beautiful, and it's especially nice to experience in the fall or springtime. The school is a nice size: You get to know your co-workers and the students, and it's a very comfortable atmosphere. In the time that I have worked at the college, there have been many improvements to the campus, and to services of the college that help the students. It's nice to be somewhere that's growing and moving forward in a positive direction. There are interesting classes, talks, and events on campus and great food services and athletic facilities that you can take advantage of. The tuition benefits are terrific, and worth taking advantage of if you can. And, the college still has a nice holiday party for the whole faculty and staff, and other celebrations throughout the year that help us get to know each other outside of our regular roles. Some other positive aspects: • Hardworking, helpful co-workers • Friendly, supportive culture • Good work is acknowledged and appreciated • Health benefits are great • Ample sick and vacation time, and good holiday schedule • Strong retirement savings benefits, if you take advantage of it • Good food services right on campus • Access to athletic facilities • It's rewarding to work with the great students here and watch them succeed • Nice tuition benefits for you, your spouse, and your children • Beautiful views of the Hudson River

    Cons

Some long hours can be required for evening and weekend events Pay increases could be better

  6. Grossly incompetent HR; unethical practices (and it's a Catholic college!)

    Pros

Beautiful location overlooking the Hudson; great cafeteria

    Cons

They don't just dismiss people on a presidential whim -- they make them disappear, never to be heard from or mentioned again. Doesn't matter what your performance reviews were -- stellar reviews, but you can still be disappeared. The faculty is dominated by a cabal of old professors who will not let any change take place. Some are vicious.

    Pros

    Nice view of the Hudson

    Cons

This is a very abusive culture. Most of the staff are afraid of losing their jobs after years of loyal service. Today I was hit and yelled at by a tenured faculty member. The tenured faculty do whatever they want because no one holds them accountable.

    Advice to Management

I don't know how to fix the problems. This school just gets worse and worse.

    Pros

Beautiful Campus. Facilities are clean. Close to NYC.

    Cons

Tenured professors are abusive and are abusive to not only other faculty and staff but also students. Staff and junior faculty are overworked and treated with disrespect. This is not a Christian atmosphere. They will let new and longtime employees go at the drop of a hat.

    Advice to Management

Stop thinking that putting up crosses in the classrooms makes you Catholic. If you want to be Christian start having some compassion for people. And get rid of the tenure process.

I have been working at Mount Saint Mary College full-time

    Pros

Very nice staff in general. Good but not fabulous benefits. Very very good work/life balance. Beautiful campus

    Cons

The administration is terrible and have no idea what anyone is really doing. There is no real sense of communication, or clarity. Certain offices border on unethical practices and in general best practice is ignored across the board. Decisions that impact the faculty and staff college wide are made without consultation of the main players and then policies are enacted with no regard for their impact. The pay is bad and no matter what you do above and beyond your position there is no increase. This is a culture in which hard work is not rewarded and where you will receive almost no positive validation for a job well done. Turn over is high and because staff are not under any contract, and are hired "at will" there is a constant fear of random firing.

    Advice to Management

Work with your employees and find out what the real issues are. There are wonderful people here who are planning to leave because there is no appreciation for their dedication and skill. There needs to be an effort made at clear and concise communication rather than a top-down approach which will only result in frustration and displeasure.

  10. Disorganized school where a lot of things fall through the cracks.

    Pros

Easy job, nice people. The campus is beautiful and there seem to be a lot of opportunities for growth. Much of the higher administration is on the verge of retirement, so lots of opportunities come up often.

    Cons

The higher-ups let their titles go to their heads. A lot of waste, which is reflected in high tuition costs. Amenities such as parking, coffee, food, etc, are hard to come by.

I worked at Mount Saint Mary College full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Local job that offers decent pay (not great) and benefits. Has an average vacation and time-off policy and can take classes for reduced tuition after one year. If you are lazy and someone who doesn't do a good job this is a great place since everyone gets the same pay increase each year regardless of how you perform.

    Cons

The college has double standards and you will find a couple departments working like crazy while others have nothing to do and lots of staff sitting around surfing the Internet. In addition, most of the staff are students who graduated from the college and never had any other work experience so they are not very good at what they do especially those who rise to the ranks of management. Also the classes are very dated and the professors are not open to upgrading programs (they would need to learn something new). The goal for students who attend college is to obtain employment once they graduate an in order to do this they need to have current skills that are recognized in their industry not stuff from the 1990.

    Advice to Management

Take a look at the staff and open your eyes and you will see there are some real issues within the college. Even though I graduated from MSMC and worked in the private sector for 20 years I cannot recommend this college to anyone...simply not the best education money can buy in the area.
