Mount Saint Mary College Reviews

Pros – Very nice staff in general.
Good but not fabulous benefits.
Very very good work/life balance.
Cons – The administration is terrible and have no idea what anyone is really doing. There is no real sense of communication, or clarity. Certain offices border on unethical practices and in general best practice is ignored across the board. Decisions that impact the faculty and staff college wide are made without consultation of the main players and then policies are enacted with no regard for their impact. The pay is bad and no matter what you do above and beyond your position there is no increase. This is a culture in which hard work is not rewarded and where you will receive almost no positive validation for a job well done. Turn over is high and because staff are not under any contract, and are hired "at will" there is a constant fear of random firing.
Advice to Senior Management – Work with your employees and find out what the real issues are. There are wonderful people here who are planning to leave because there is no appreciation for their dedication and skill. There needs to be an effort made at clear and concise communication rather than a top-down approach which will only result in frustration and displeasure.
No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company
Pros – Nice view of the Hudson
Cons – This is a very abusive culture. Most of the staff are afraid of losing their jobs after years of loyal service. Today I was hit and yelled at by a tenured faculty member. The tenured faculty do whatever they want because no one holds them accountable.
Advice to Senior Management – I don't know how to fix the problems. This school just gets worse and worse.
Pros – Beautiful Campus. Facilities are clean. Close to NYC.
Cons – Tenured professors are abusive and are abusive to not only other faculty and staff but also students. Staff and junior faculty are overworked and treated with disrespect. This is not a Christian atmosphere. They will let new and longtime employees go at the drop of a hat.
Advice to Senior Management – Stop thinking that putting up crosses in the classrooms makes you Catholic. If you want to be Christian start having some compassion for people. And get rid of the tenure process.
Pros – Easy job, nice people. The campus is beautiful and there seem to be a lot of opportunities for growth. Much of the higher administration is on the verge of retirement, so lots of opportunities come up often.
Cons – The higher-ups let their titles go to their heads. A lot of waste, which is reflected in high tuition costs. Amenities such as parking, coffee, food, etc, are hard to come by.

Pros – Local job that offers decent pay (not great) and benefits. Has an average vacation and time-off policy and can take classes for reduced tuition after one year. If you are lazy and someone who doesn't do a good job this is a great place since everyone gets the same pay increase each year regardless of how you perform.
Cons – The college has double standards and you will find a couple departments working like crazy while others have nothing to do and lots of staff sitting around surfing the Internet. In addition, most of the staff are students who graduated from the college and never had any other work experience so they are not very good at what they do especially those who rise to the ranks of management. Also the classes are very dated and the professors are not open to upgrading programs (they would need to learn something new). The goal for students who attend college is to obtain employment once they graduate an in order to do this they need to have current skills that are recognized in their industry not stuff from the 1990.
Advice to Senior Management – Take a look at the staff and open your eyes and you will see there are some real issues within the college. Even though I graduated from MSMC and worked in the private sector for 20 years I cannot recommend this college to anyone...simply not the best education money can buy in the area.
No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
Pros – Small college makes it easy to feel like a part of the family
Great people and community
Some great perks, like lunchtime yoga classes
Close to major highways
Great views of the mountains
Cons – High levels of turnover
Unclear expectations can make it difficult to complete job requirements
Advice to Senior Management – I think that any time management trusts its workers and gives them the freedom to do their job in the best way that they know how that is when the best solutions and work will emerge.
