I worked at Mountain States Health full-time

    Pros

The team atmosphere at MSHA creates a great working environment.

    Cons

The wages offered at MSHA are below average compared to wages provided in the surrounding geographical area.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Well compensated employees are happy employees that tend to continue working.

I worked at Mountain States Health

    Pros

respected in the community, largest healthcare employer in the region, wellness center

    Cons

Poor benefits, nonexistent raises, no performance based raises, enforce rules with scare tactics, poor nurse patient staff ratios, money hemorrhaging into things, facilities, and programs that do not impact patient care, more money needed for front line patient caregivers

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Positive reinforcement would go much further with team members rather than repercussion tactics. I have seen a lot of great employees leave over the years for more pay and better work hours. Middle management's hands are tied..it's the higher ups calling the shots in staffing and they do not even know what it is like to be a bedside nurse. It is all cookie cutter to them with no regards to individualized care and the time and staff it takes to provide such.

I have been working at Mountain States Health full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

I felt like I was truly a part of a team. The benefits are great and the cost is reasonable. I love that there is room to grow and move up in this company. If you truly apply yourself and show some initiative, you can move up the ladder. I have heard people complain about no room for advancement, but it has been my experience that those are usually unmotivated people. There are also a lot of opportunities to make a different and volunteer to help others. MSHA is involved in many community events and really cares about the local area.

    Cons

I don't have a college degree but have a lot of experience. There are some jobs that I would love to be able to apply for that I know I would excel at but am limited because of my education. I wish that in some of those positions they would consider experience.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be sure to let your team members know when they do a good job and not just when they make mistakes. When people feel good about their work they excel and when they don't, they do the minimum required to keep their jobs. Be friendly to the little guys. It takes a whole team to make it work as a system.

I worked at Mountain States Health full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I truly enjoyed and respected the people that I worked with on a daily basis. I had excellent encounters with senior leadership who mostly really wanted to do the right thing for the community.

    Cons

As an organization that has 14 hospitals across a wide geographic area, it can sometimes be difficult to make change happen especially with the amount of people that have to come to a consensus. Promotions can be a bit slow within MSHA, but I think that is more indicative of the area than MSHA. There are fewer options of places to work in East TN than many other area. This can lead to people staying in one spot for a long time.

    Pros

They allowed me to work in a critical car/surgical area right out of school with no experience, that doesn't happen in other systems.

    Cons

The corporate system has no incentive to improve working conditions as staff has to either deal with it or move out of the region.

    Pros

paid on time, free coffee, adequate education of general health care policies

    Cons

low pay, emphasis on productivity with very little training and support, very high turnover rate, favoritism, uneven benefit structure

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value employees who do their jobs well, rather than promote ineffective employees due to favoritism; listen to people actually doing the job, not managers trying to save their positions

I have been working at Mountain States Health full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

There are a lot of high quality people employed by MSHA and most in my department are very dedicated to their colleagues and organization.

    Cons

Pay and benefits are not competitive outside of clinical areas. Executive leadership fails to see the reality of the diminished morale in multiple departments. No real attempt is made to keep quality individuals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to take a long hard look at all the supporting departments to address gaps and team member dissatisfaction.
