Very friendly and collegial working environment.

    Adjunct Instructor (Current Employee)

ProsTop-notch university, friendly supervisors and coworkers.

ConsJob has the typical challenges as any job in the education field would. Not many support services for the summer students and they are needed.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease look into providing learning support to students for the summer sessions.

    Great place to work.

    Adjunct Instructor (Current Employee)
    Allentown, PA

ProsVery laid bvack environment. The staff is wonderful to work for and the students are great !

ConsThere seems to be a disconnect between the part-time faculty and the full-time tenured faculty, which makes it hard to assess whether the correct material is being covered.

great, loved the people I worked with

    Tutor (Former Employee)

Pros- lots of student job opportunities
    - employers give great advice and support
    - really enjoyable community atmosphere

Cons- depending on who you work with, they might show favoritism for some people
    - can't always get tutoring jobs if they're not available (also depends on which classes you are qualified to tutor for)

    Great summer job for students

    Conference Assistant (Current Employee)
    Allentown, PA

ProsFree campus housing over the summer, provides income while taking classes, the people that work at muhlenberg are generally pretty friendly and fun to work for.

ConsNot the greatest pay ever, but having free housing definitely makes it better than most. Students usually do menial tasks and don't gain very much job experience.

Advice to Senior ManagementJust make the salary enough to live off of while a student is buying there own food and other necessities.

Muhlenberg College is an employer that really cares about its staff

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsSupportive supervisors, great facilities, and happy co-workers. There is always someone to offer a smile, and people really notice each other.

ConsThere really were no downsides except that being at a desk all day can be daunting for me. That said, there are always opportunities not to be sitting down at a desk, save days when phones are very busy.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep on keepin' on.

Good but not great - not living up to its real potential.

    Faculty Member (Current Employee)
    Allentown, PA

ProsThe work environment is mostly collegial and laid back, with relatively little top-down supervision or oversight. The campus is pleasant, and convenient to a variety of eating, shopping, and living opportunities.

ConsLike many small colleges, too many administrators, faculty, and staff just go through the motions. The "strategic plan" isn't -- it's a shopping list of fundraising priorities.
Departments and other units on campus have "external reviews",
but the reviewers often lack the time & experience to do a good job,
which doesn't really matter since their reports are usually ignored.
Faculty are supposed to be focused on student learning,
but too many use ineffective techniques (lecture, insufficient student work & feedback),
and lack the time, resources, and/or motivation to stay active and current in their specialties.

Advice to Senior ManagementIdentify some real strategic priorities, announce them publicly, and act on them.
If teaching and learning are important, align the rest of the administration to support them.
Acknowledge problems and work to solve them, rather than ignoring them and hope they go away.

    College that respects each individual

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Allentown, PA

ProsAll of the staff in every department is helpful and respectful. It is a very positive environment to work in.

ConsThere is not much money in each department to keep employees up to date in their fields. This must be done on your own time with your own incentive. If you plan to leave you might find yourself out of date unless you make this a priority.

Advice to Senior ManagementRealize that staff development is important and keeping up with the technology in one's field is very important too.

    Visiting Instructor Position

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Allentown, PA

ProsMuhlenberg is a small congenial liberal arts college with a focus on providing a caring attitude towards students. Your experience working as a visitor there will largely depend upon the relationships in your department rather than with the administration. The good news is that there are several recent cases of people who started out as visiting instructors who were invited to continue on to full-time positions. Congeniality between faculty and administration is generally good, and good teaching is highly respected.

ConsAs a visiting instructor, it can be easy to feel like an outsider unless you make strong efforts. People will act welcoming at first but soon get overwhelmed by their own busy schedules. There are a number of programs specifically for incoming faculty, however. There is a strong culture of "busyness" at the school which can make it intimidating to approach superiors for feedback.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe college was generally a very nice place to work; it's not that I don't have any complaints but that my concerns are specific to my own situation and might not be relevant to anyone else.

    College

    Lecturer (Former Employee)
    Allentown, PA

ProsMuhlenberg is a great college with wonderful students and exceptionally talented professors and staff.

ConsAt the departmental level, communication is a major problem. In my department morale is quite low and there is an overwhelming feeling of competition and dissatisfaction with many areas of operation, such as evaluations, reward and recognition for outstanding work, continued education, support for research and scholastic projects, team building events and mentoring for faculty and staff.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore monitoring and process implementation at the central management level. Colleges are difficult due to the silo type nature - each department operates as its own small business. Overall, it is still a business and the President must be aware of what is happening in each classroom. The chair of the department is not always the best way to assess department's success. The President should dig deeper to determine exactly what is happening from each employee - full-time, adjuncts, and support staff.
