I have been working at MultiCare Health System full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Smart, hardworking co-workers who are very friendly.
I get great direction from my supervisor without being micromanaged.
Management is always looking to the future of the industry.
Excellent IT infrastructure and cutting edge technology.
Patient care constantly reinforced as the priority and the nurses and providers embody this. The people here really do care.
    Top notch benefits.
I really like the food at the cafeteria!

    Cons

The hospitals are fantastic but some of the buildings for shared support services are older.
Challenging environment right now with changes (but that could be applied to the entire healthcare and hospital industry).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Some more town hall style meetings with employees would help everyone to feel that they are an important stakeholder.

I have been working at MultiCare Health System

    Pros

Good pay and a large system.

    Cons

Job instability. "Work until the work is done." Takes advantage of salary employees. No work life balance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Show that you value your employees who have worked hard and been dedicated to MultiCare rather than treating them as something disposable.

Sometimes employees need to go “above and beyond” to deliver excellent patient care or to support those who do. “Exempt” jobs vary in their demands, and sometimes require more than a standard 8-hour ... More

I worked at MultiCare Health System

    Pros

Some of the employees are great

    Cons

The supervisor was just awful. She never took the time to get to know any of her employees unless they worked first shift. She gave preferential treatment, and even covered for employees that broke the rules, yet others she went after for the littlest thing. Everyone not on first shift were very unhappy, and luckily got out.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Some people skills would be nice. You gave the "laboratory personality" its reputation as being really unsocial, and not understanding of simple management principles. The manager of the department spent all of his time in the office or teaching college, so it was all on the supervisor who did a horrible job of managing people.

Former Employee - Physician, Urgent Care

I worked at MultiCare Health System part-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

EPIC, the new CEO may bring a culture change

    Cons

As a physician, loss of clinical authority from dictatorial management and production line mentality. Understaffed and under qualified staff in clinics. Worst Urgent Care I've ever been at. Unethical management. My opinion shared by many providers, but also look at objective data of high provider turnover, sick call (when do doctors call in sick?), and low Press-Ganey scores.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Studer & other classes will not change core values of existing management. To truly get a culture change, leadership needs some new blood.

I worked at MultiCare Health System full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

There are great opportunities to learn and expand your knowledge. Pay is competitive and fair compared to other organizations of similar size and type.

    Cons

There are a high number of changes often poorly implemented. It is sometimes difficult to know where the organization is going at any given time.

    Current Employee - Registered Nurse

I have been working at MultiCare Health System full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Beautiful new unit with single patient rooms
    Competitive salaries
Medicine very collaborative and supportive of nursing
Excellent support for parents (treehouse lodging for longterm stays)
New CEO approved consultant group to come in and work on communication issues between nursing management and staff
Job posting for new clinical director to replace current director

    Cons

Historically this unit has had struggles with management, recent staff engagement survey put staff approval of nursing management in single digits. Frustration with nursing management has lead to several senior staff to leave and entire unit based committee's to resign Moral is poor
Minimal educational opportunities for new nurses after initial orientation
Management provides little to no support to improve patient satisfaction yet pressures staff to increase 'scores'
Current nursing management fails to support nurses who go onto get their MBA opting instead to hire assistant managers with no management experience
Current nursing management approach to implementation of change is disorganized and poor communication creates stress for nurses and negatively impacts patient satisfaction

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Replace the nurse manager of this unit with someone who has both a masters degree and at least 5 yrs experience in a management position. Have senior management personal i.e. ceo of nursing engage with front line nursing staff, 'boots on the ground'
