I worked at NACG part-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Good pay, good crew to work with

    Cons

Management has gone from being a company who cares about the employees to one focused on the dollar.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember that your employees make you, learn who they are and how you can help them help you.

Former Employee - Heavy Equipment Operator

I worked at NACG full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Good pay. Good schedule. Good people for most part.

    Cons

You have to be from Newfoundland in order to progress. Lots of favoritism. Treat Heavy Haul Operators like second hand citizens. Racism is tolerated. Foreman are usually good if not from Newfoundland. Senior management don't care about their employees. Never guaranteed to work day to day. Poor safety record and getting worse. You are kept in dark a lot. Poor communication

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start treating all employees the same and have some respect for them. They make or break you.

I have been working at NACG full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Opportunity to advance up the ladder quickly as lots of people quit due to former management that didn't have a clue about the business

    Cons

Company is recovering from struggles with debt and reputation because of the previous bad management that drove the company almost into bankruptcy

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the construction folks and not the accountants. The overhead was killing the company and the large reduction in middle management is helping.

    Cons

Training is a throw to the wolves kind of thing. It works well for some but leaves deadweight around with others.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to continue to focus on mentorship and training of all staff as well as hold Managers more accountable for the morale and performance of their teams.

I have been working at NACG

    Pros

    - Friendly people
    - Competitive starting pay
    - Good exposure when fresh out of university

    Cons

    - Unfair expectations with no upward mobility
    - No incentive to stay i.e. long-term incentives, options
    - No mentorship
    - Frequent layoffs. No culture
    - High turnover. Really low employee moral

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Be proactive in promoting within instead of trying to react to your employees receiving a better offer elsewhere.
    - Shake up middle management. There ideas haven't worked. They are too cozy and do a bad job mentoring potential future leaders in the company and giving them a reason to stay.

Train good workers. Especially to grow from within.

I have been working at NACG

    Pros

    - Competitive wages and benefits package
    - Offices are well kept

    Cons

    - Negative work environment and high turnover rate
    - Overtime is expected with no compensation (under-resourced)
    - Poor leadership, and no sense of direction
    - Poor communication between divisions
    - Re-orgs are common and frequent
    - Employees have little or no say in process improvement projects

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Engage your lower level employees and managers in process improvement projects to improve overall employee morale.
    - Ensure leadership understands the goals of the organization and convey them properly to reporting employeees.
    - Find a solution to better integrate the different divisions.
    - Human capital is your key resource, without the adequate amount, the company cannot achieve their goals. Hire more people in all required areas and your turnover rate should be lower.
