Pros
interesting if you are into space application. Reasonably good work/life balance.
Cons
salaries are slightly lower than in the industry
Pros
Competitive Pay
Excellent worklife balance
excellent opportunities for promotional growth
Cons
location
low pay starting out, but grows exponentially
Pros
The benefits at NASA are some of the best. At a very junior level, I had access to the same packages as senior level employees. There is also incredible job security and the work atmosphere is very relaxed.
Cons
The pay for NASA is similar to other positions in the government. Most people can earn more doing the same job in the private sector.
Advice to Senior Management
Some of the higher management is detached for the things that go on every day on the ground. Some people can go months without seeing their boss.
Pros
-ultimate coolness
-chance to work on amazing things
-technological growth keeps employees stimulated
Cons
-politics
-agenda set at very high government level
-less of science push, more interest in missions
Advice to Senior Management
Bring bag the emphasis on science.
Pros
Challenging work, good people. The projects are fun and there are good opportunities for career growth. Very good benefits for employees
Cons
Promotions are more based off of seniority rather than work performance. It is difficult to transfer knowledge to other industries.
Advice to Senior Management
Try and engage lower level employees more so that they can understand the impact they make on the projects or the agency.
Pros
Elite organisation (NSSTC)
World class research
Lots of facilities
Good professors
Cons
Need to put in more than 40/week
Lots of stress
Advice to Senior Management
circulim should be made little easier
Pros
Great environment; friendly people; balanced work personal life.
Cons
Pay is low, but I can't judge fairly, since it's a postdoc position. No dental or vision plan.
Advice to Senior Management
no comment.
Pros
Collegial and nurturing environment, flexible work hours, great benefits, lots of time off.
Cons
Salaries are lower than industry standards but commesurate with work schedule.
Advice to Senior Management
Impose tighter controls on work schedule as some folks abuse the system.
Pros
Best resources, best learning tools, great/friendly people, flexible hours, great facility. The baby boomers will be retiring soon so NASA will be looking to hire younger people. Also, there are many opportunities available for young professionals to develop from NASA's online class databse to instructors that teach weekly seminars on powerpoint, excel, etc.
Cons
Poor compensation, the work is not challenging enough, the projects can be boring, and the efficiency at which people work is extremely slow (especially when compared to private sector counterparts).
Advice to Senior Management
Focus more on the younger employees at NASA. The OFCO is doing a good job of this. I'm not so sure about the other departments though.
Pros
Cool work, with one of a kind opportunities to be part of space exploration. Lots of education reimbursement benefits. Good work-life balance.
Cons
Slow and bureaucratic, with many "lifers" unwilling to work. Innovation and youthful enthusiasm are blunted at every turn. Reliance on congressional funding cycles makes work choppy and disjointed. No connection to final product and no PROFIT MOTIVATION.
Advice to Senior Management
Pay more than just lip service to the fact that your workforce is aging. Bring younger people and younger ideas to the table.
