I worked at NASA as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Plenty of brilliant people that really know how to do their job. Really exiting work that consistently challenges you to do more. Despite the laid back culture, everyone wants to be at work and contribute as much as they can. No one bugs you to make sure you are doing your work. Good work-life balance. I worked as a Graduate Fellow, so I was expected to be more independent, so I didn't get the same training as I would expect a full timer to get, but everyone was very helpful when asked questions.

    Cons

Pay seemed decent, but I'm not sure how it works for full-timers. It seemed like the chances of getting hired on full-time were slim due to cutbacks, yet alone being promoted somewhere down the line. Lots of politics between different engineers all wanting to make a name for themselves and between civil servants and contractors. Lots of red-tape when sometimes the best solution is to keep it simple.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I had great interactions with management, but I do think they need to be more involved with the engineer's drama and actually do something about it. Lots of people tended to act passive-aggressively instead of just addressing the issues.

I have been working at NASA full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Working space missions, contributing to exploration. Doing a job that few people have the honor to do. Work-life balance is excellent.

    Cons

Questionable future for NASA, at least for human spaceflight. NASA will probably continue with robotics, but human spaceflight will likely transition to the private sector like the airline industry. It is unfortunate that an agency such as NASA has become a toy for all politicians.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on the future. The past is past.

I have been working at NASA full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Easy, same thing every day.

    Cons

Easy, same thing every day. Stupid government policies to follow.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of some of the dumb policies that make getting real work done.

I have been working at NASA as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

I feel very lucky to have had the experience of interning at NASA. I learned so much about ongoing research and everyone I met was happy to show me around and talk about their projects.

    Cons

Commuting in Washington, DC is difficult and time consuming. However, NASA is placed near a Metro station.

I have been working at NASA as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

People are extremely nice and welcoming, looks incredible on resume, opportunity to meet astronauts, policymakers, and nobel prize winners, lots of events to go to, very cordial environment

    Cons

some NASA employees seem to have been discouraged from budget cuts and changes brought in by each administration, and this can reflect poorly on the overall morale of the office.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remind everyone how incredible NASA's history and prestige is, and how people throughout the world look at NASA as a leader - and if you work for this agency - be proud. Don't get down on the budget cuts...stay positive and keep that amazing cordial environment.

I have been working at NASA full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The people here are dedicated professionals, many of whom have worked in the space program for decades. They have a passion for NASA and for space which shows in their attitudes and work.

    Cons

Change at NASA takes place at a glacial pace. Technical innovation is prized but any other kind of change is frowned upon. Even technical innovation, though valued, takes a long time to implement. Promotions are difficult to come by as the organization is very top heavy with few people interested in retiring.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

NASA needs to get away from its risk averse culture and back to being the organization that put men on the moon.
