I have been working at NASW as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

It is the professional organization of social workers and a lot of the employees are social workers themselves so by nature they are very open and understanding. It is a good, low-stress place to work.

    Cons

The work at times can be boring. The way the offices are set up is a little isolating and people don't spend a lot of time getting to know each other. Basically you come in in the morning, do your work and leave in the afternoon. A lot of the employees are contractors that are not very invested in the organization.

    Pros

Access to lots of interesting national social work policy and practice information.

    Cons

Union and management politics made for strained relationships and distrust. Not a lot of room for upward mobility.

I have been working at NASW as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I work for them freelance. They are not only generous and supportive but they give me the opportunity to gain experience and show what I can do. I feel like a contributor and am pushing the envelope in this field.

    Cons

As with most, if not all, corporate employers I don't always get paid in the time frame I prefer. Having said that, I have always gotten paid.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It is not important--it is critical--to keep up with the current state of technology as well as marketing and PR practices. This is not only for the purpose of helping members earn a living wage, but to reach clients who truly need help before crises occur--and beyond, to become the best people they can be to contribute to our society.
