One of the better tech companies to work for in Chicago in terms of work-life balance; not the best pay-master around

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Chicago, IL

Pros- Global company so opportunity to work with people from all over the world
    - The company to work for for folks passionate about mapping and location based services
    - Good management team and reasonable career progression opportunities
    - Good work-life balance

Cons- Struggling to find sustainable business models built around location based business models given that Google has commoditized the "Map"
    - Very average pay with the exception of some positions
    - Very poor HR support to employees for career advancement and encouragement to pursue advanced education
    - Way too bureaucratic for a mid-size tech company

Advice to Senior Management- Need to upgrade operational leadership asap to achieve cut product costs; cannot hang your hat on product leadership alone...need to achieve competence in operations as well
    - Work with HR to create a more positive workplace in terms of HR support and opportunities for advanced professional education

In my work at Navteq in the IT department people in general are pretty good, but it has larger company issues

    QA Analyst II (Former Employee)
    Chicago, IL

Prossomewhat flexible work schedule for full timers. not so much for contractors. they let you work with open source free stuff, but those aren't necessarily the best tools. they don't micromanage you. great location. nice gym. they are trying to innovate and recreate themselves.

Consthey don't really know how to manage projects. some of the managers are decent, but others are just there for the paycheck. people speak numerous different languages at work. there have been spirited debates among the project, with high turnover for some positions. the problem with navteq is for an average IT hack, you have to rely on other people who don't report to your manager and aren't under your management to get work done and figure stuff out, otherwise things get delayed.

Great coworkers. Good exposure to new technologies.

    Technical Operations (Current Employee)
    Chicago, IL

ProsExposure to Bleeding edge software technologies.
    Great people to work with.
Company growth has been decent during the recession.
Many opportunities to further personal growth.

ConsPay is at the lower end of the scale.
More and more contracting out jobs - mostly in R&D for now.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep new technologies R&D and Ops in house. Don't start the popular contracting out to cheap labor.

Long Hours - Work Evenings at Home

    Product Support (Former Employee)
    Chicago, IL

ProsDedicated, smart staff and very diverse work force

ConsLong hours, expecting you to work at home at night as well as weekends when deadlines approach. Family Leave Time off to care for sick family member was denied, as I had not worked there long enough to qualify. Disappoining lack of sympathy for my situation from Management and Human Resources.

Advice to Senior ManagementPay close attenion and scrutinize sales management for conduct and inconsiderate treatment of staff.

major difficulties transforming into a software/services company

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Boston, MA

ProsStrong success with digital maps especially in some markets (automotive).
    Very competitive benefits package
    Low turnover

ConsIt is historically a data/device oriented company. There is very little understanding of how modern software is built and no political will to get away from old style heavy bureaucratic processes and embrace fast paced and chaotic world of user centric software services. Lack of integrity and cynicism at all levels of management. Company is in denial regarding competition. Navteq should not be playing in the one sandbox with Google. Not until it changes its culture and becomes much more dynamic, realistic and focused. Software development capabilities and processes leave much to be desired.

Advice to Senior ManagementDo not get stuck on maps ("maps is what we do so our 3 year road map must be about maps..." ). Look at what is really happening in the industry. Identify realistic goals and go after them. Do not overestimate the company's ability to compete with internet heavy weights.

    Sinking Ship

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Chicago, IL

ProsVery addictive technology, one of a kind products, huge potential to grow big as a company

ConsSenior management with no technology vision, not employee friendly work place, HR behaves like NAZi's, no fairness when it comes to employees vs management, company does not care about your personal life, no strategy to take the company to the next level, haven for ex Motorolla employees crushing all the principles, values once NAVTEQ cared...

Advice to Senior ManagementWe need new blood, new thinkers who has a vision & strategy, current management needs to be fired for incompetency...nothing new in the last 2-3 years...its a shame for a company like NAVTEQ, HR needs have a 360 with NAVTEQ of their policies and attitude...

    Adapting to innovative wireless

    Product Manager (Current Employee)
    Chicago, IL

ProsFlexible schedule, support for trying new ideas, many opportunities within company, job security, work hard-play hard

ConsSalary is average-at-best and long-time employees are underpaid vs. new hires, many team silos results in confusion and overlapping work

Advice to Senior ManagementRemaining B2B is prohibiting growth especially in wireless

Frustrating, bureaucratic, and losing its market position

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Chicago, IL

ProsFor the time being, it's a very stable work environment and offers good work-life balance, even at relatively senior levels.

I've always felt like I've been taken seriously and respected in my role - no one should feel like they can't contribute.

ConsThere is so much potential for this company to do great and innovative things, but its various divisions are constantly fighting each other rather than collaborating.

It's very, very difficult to get noticed and promoted. There's almost no attrition at the director level and above.

Pay is miserable compared to equivalent positions elsewhere.

Advice to Senior ManagementFor a tech company, you should be able to find and retain more technical talent. The folks who have been there 15 years or more are hurting far more than they're helping, and have no idea how to deal with technical innovation.
