I worked at NAVTEQ full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    1. Map software was very cool to work with 2. People were helpful and kind 3. Moved to full scale agile shop 4. Provide good training on Agile

    Cons

    1. Management direction and company focus was all over the place. We moved from Navteq to Nokia to Here in about 1 year. 2. Politics were pretty high in the company

    Advice to Management

Navteq was good. The Nokia and Here movements were all over the place. The direction seems all over the place. The move to agile was done great...migration of 74 teams over 1 year.

I worked at NAVTEQ full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Navteq is a modern company with good tech and a sensible core business. It's serious about training, is surprisingly relaxed and humane in its office culture, and actually makes an effort to keep the rank-and-file updated about the big picture in the company.

    Cons

Senior management is absolutely clueless and sometimes unethical. If you're in production, expect to be asked to do things in the map database that could result in someone getting hurt. Projects are sometimes/often quixotic and irrational outside of core map maintenance. Quality control has been going down the toilet, because a lot of the production process is being shipped overseas to cheap workers who absolutely do not care at all about accuracy. Bottom line, this company makes GPS maps for cars. Upper management either doesn't seem to understand that or doesn't like it, and don't understand the limitations of GPS technology (I mean, really--a GPS mapping program for navigation inside skyscrapers? Do they not understand that skyscrapers absolutely destroy a GPS signal?).

    Advice to Management

Train on your own production processes and serve a month or two as a floor engineer. The things that upper management commonly asks the floor staff to so are positively braindead.

I worked at NAVTEQ full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Navteq maps and Navteq traffic products were simply technically superior to their competitors, Google, Tele Atlas, etc.

    Cons

They relied on GPS business but couldn't compete with Google and got lost in the shuffle; Nokia then Microsoft. Don't know where it is now really, it's called "here.com" now, but probably will be something else in a year.

    Pros

    Easy work. Laid back.

    Cons

Low pay. Little to no advancement opportunity.

    Advice to Management

You don't need geographic analysts anymore. You just need drivers to drive the cars and can outsource the coding overseas for cheaper.

I have been working at NAVTEQ as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

In the Information Systems Division the environment is great. Mostly everyone is very knowledgeable and are willing to drop things to help you when you need it. It's also pretty relax unless users are becoming a nuisance.

    Cons

Acquired by Nokia and the Nokia way is destroying the company. Becoming strict with vacation days and changing the workflow and using products that are not as functional as previous technologies. Also not hiring in IS division due to reconstruction of division.

    Advice to Management

Hire more workers and the ones that have been working hard. Keep fighting bad decisions by Nokia.

I have been working at NAVTEQ full-time

    Pros

An opportunity to work for a global company and get solid, meaningful international exposure and experience. You will be working in a field that is dynamic, cutting edge, and changing rapidly.

    Cons

Significant shifts in strategy - it is not "ranging in", it is more "Ok, let's try this..." A manager can miss performance targets wildly and there are few visible repercussions.
