Poor leadership...absolutely no vision for the future other than how to cut more costs (i.e. people)

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at NB Coatings full-time

ProsA resilient workforce that stuck together through multiple, brutal downsizings since 2009.
A good work-life balance.

ConsThe company stopped investing in itself after it was purchased by Nippon Paint and that lack of investment is starting to show (talent dilution, lack of new products, etc.)
Less-than average compensation with no true opportunity to grow through career-path planning.
Bad upper management with absolutely no future vision or understanding on how to grow a healthy business.

Advice to Senior ManagementTo grow the business in the future, you must invest in the business through R&D and new business development based out of North America that has a true understanding of the target market. (You cannot cut your way to sustained prosperity!!)

Mismanaged opportunities

ProsThis company has been around for over 60 years. Even though it has been sold and gone through several transitions it has kept its hold on POP business.

ConsEvery year it seems as if health insurance changes. Career paths are not consistent in the company. Every department/manager has their own/personal way of giving raises or level ups. Most times when someone gets a level bump they are put right at the bottom which usually doesn't mean there is a raise involved because the pay structure over laps so much it just means more responsibility with the expectation of more work. Cost of living is never considered. The company calls your raise cost of living. Which is below national average. Most times when a job is up for bid everyone knows who is getting it because of the preferential treatment certain employees get in this company. Training is a joke. Moral is very low. Most employees who have been with the company before Nippon took over had to take pay cuts for the good of the company and lost lots more in the reorganization a that happened. A lot of these employees look for other jobs or feel like they are stuck because of the amount of time they have the few perks like vacation time stops them from leaving and have to start over with other companies. The company band aids lots of problems wether it be equipment, the building itself, or employees issues. The culture of this company seems to be getting worse and worse.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere needs to be a reevaluation of employees and where they belong in your pay scale. Wether they deserve to be higher pay in their levels or a higher level. Bonus structure shouldn't be top heavy. Everyone works hard to make this company profitable and when the little guy who lives paycheck to paycheck gets 4/5/6% bonus while watching the suits get 15/20/25% bonus is another reason moral will never be good. There needs to be a more even payout when the company is profitable. This makes management and the company look bad. The company and it's leaders must change their culture before it's employees will. The old adage of lead by example. If you want this company to take the next step and be a top 100 company you need to let go of the purse strings and you won't believe the amount of success you will see from your employees. They will all work harder for you. Again with the adages. You catch more flies with honey. Your employees will do more without the stranglehold you put on them.

Stressful and demoralizing

Chemist (Current Employee)
Lansing, IL

I have been working at NB Coatings full-time for more than 10 years

ProsIt's a very clean environment. Decent work life balance. Some good friendships.

ConsNo career paths. Lower than national average pay scale. Poor training. Management has no clue on how to treat employees. High stress. Low moral. Horrible training. Communication in this company is so poor it's almost non existent. Employees are over worked and under payed.

Advice to Senior ManagementStart paying your employees before all your qualified ones leave. They are going to your competitors and while weakening your staff your competitors are getting stronger. You have to change the management culture before the moral and employee loyalty will ever change.

Poor Leadership, Don't apply here unless you are desperate.

shader (Current Employee)

I have been working at NB Coatings full-time for more than 5 years

ProsWork life is ok, They prep you for your next job learning to put up with BS.

ConsPay have scales change too hire new people for cheap. Only making management bonuses bigger. Raises go to the ones that brown nose them not earned.

Advice to Senior ManagementMy advice to you is too treat your good high productive workers equal. Stop lying to yourselves about the talent you have. Competitors know your employees are getting ready to leave. Let's not get started how you guys screw over the OEMs by giving false material too save money. Haha how does a senior chemist make the same as a ( human resource generalist) aka a secretary. Please look at your salaries tab that's the main example. You guys screwed over people in the past and it's still not forgotten. Your pay scales are nothing like market value. Better hope you can keep with your top 100 Lies.

Frustrating, disasterous, lacking, poor managent

Production (Current Employee)
Lansing, IL

I have been working at NB Coatings full-time for more than 10 years

ProsThe automotive market seems to be coming out of the recession and job cuts don't seem to be lingering in employees minds as much anymore.

ConsThe pay scale is below national average for this industry. You can go to any of the competitors and you will start out 20% higher in pay. The amount of work/tasks that has been required from employees seems to have gotten to be more and more. All to often when someone leaves the company, instead of replacing them the work is just added to the next employee. This seems to be the companies way of controlling costs (pay, benefits, etc.). The employee taking on the extra workload is not compensated for their extra effort. The extra effort is expected. This company has the worst training I have ever been involved with. There are to many middle managers that are just yes men. These positions are a waste of resources. This company could use more on hands employees instead of the middle management structure they have. The way it is set up seems to be so starting at the top there are more people to point a finger at when blame is trying to be averted. This company is loaded with stress and low moral because of the management.

Advice to Senior ManagementYour pay structure has to be fixed so it is on a more even scale with your competitors. You need to make sure the employees who are your top producers get compensated. Quit being so naive. Not everyone can handle the stress created in this company. Get out of the yes man mode and quit lying to yourselves. Look in the mirror and ask yourself am I doing my best or just nodding my head in agreement all the time.

– I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

OK

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at NB Coatings

ProsTight network between departments. Able to change focus quickly

ConsPerhaps too learn to sustain growth in the industry

Advice to Senior ManagementThe company has made itself too lean. They have cut out several salary roles in an effort to save money, but have made themselves vulnerable to become idol when it comes to continuous improvement. Many employees are responsible for soo many tasks that continues improvement is a back burner to daily activities. Many of these key contributors are beginning to leave the company because compensation does NOT match the industry standard or the level of responsibility of many employee roles.
