Pros
-Great work environment, in a beautiful setting, and world reknowned site.
-Good food
-Great experience and if you work hard a great platform for career advance and future opportunities and outlets.
-If you are truly doing something you are passionate about at NBC Universal then this is a great place to work. If not, you are probably busting your ass somewhere in entry-level, hoping to climb the ladder...good luck
Cons
-Highly competitive
-Extreme hierarchical system.
Pros
Working in the Entertainment industry
Star sightings on the lot
Understand how all the magic happens
Cons
Lots of ownerships change over last 10 years
No real culture overall - silos per division
no economies of scale
Pros
The supervisors are very receptive to your career goals and interests, and therefore encourage you to explore any areas of interest. Your work is recognized and you know how it fits into a bigger picture.
Cons
Not too many opportunities to take on a higher level of responsibility. Sometimes projects get tedious and too long term.
Advice to Senior Management
TBD
Pros
If you live in the "Valley" it's a great location, even if you lived in Hollywood, I'd consider working at Universal.
Cons
If you do not live in the "Valley" it's could be a big commute, if you in Hollywood, it still might be a big drive in the mornings.
Advice to Senior Management
You should seriously consider giving free entry to the Universal Parks, It would be a great benefit, for the employees.
Pros
Quality programming, creative team, enjoyable work
Cons
Highly-political making it impossible to navigate successfully.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen and respect your people
Pros
Amazing colleagues, friendly people, interesting high-profile work. Good location.
Cons
Management does not adequately compensate its employees for their hard work. Many need to leave the company or department to receive even a minimal cost of living increase in pay. Increased hours expected for stagnant, non-market wages.
Advice to Senior Management
Salaries are a good 20-30% below market. Institute regular bonuses and predictable raises. Promote people regularly and fairly.
Pros
Great opportunities for pitching new programs. Each production staff is not limited to working within itself - since there are many ongoing specials and re-cuts, the teams are often able to collaborate and expand their network of contacts.
Cons
With such a large company, moving up in position takes much longer than with most production companies. Also, although pitching new programs within the company is welcomed, the security of owning your idea can be somewhat difficult and political.
Advice to Senior Management
Manage your employees schedules to fit their range of duties as best as possible. Sometimes producers are scheduled to work a later shift to supervise their editors at night, but they need to make phone calls and attend meetings in the mornings to maintain relationships with vendors and prepare work for production. This conflict of schedules can cause an unnecessarily exhausting habit of overworking.
Pros
flexible schedule, good benefits and locations
Cons
as a place to work have not found some really bad points yet
Pros
The experience in marketing, hispanic market, entertainment and the large opportunity for networking. Telemundo is part of NBC universal and that looks great in a resume.
Cons
The entry level jobs pay low salaries in comparison to other fields. long hours are expected including nights and weekends.
Advice to Senior Management
Work on a better work life balance for employees, particularly after employee demonstrates high level of work and commitment.
Pros
Hey, you are working on the Universal Studios lot. If that excites you, then you should work here. I met a great bunch of people while working at NBC. The salary was decent but promotions were not. There is a chance to move up in the company but you have to play games. That's life though. Enjoy.
Cons
Kind of a playground environment. Not a lot of order.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen! Promote based on merit.
