I have been working at NBT Bancorp full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

A lot of great people to work with, So many job opportunities around the home headquarters.

    Cons

Employment is poorly compensated. A lot of new people will come in at higher pay then if you are promoted up the ladder.

    Advice to Management

If you continue expecting more, with less employees at least pay them what they deserve to be making.

    Pros

Working in a retail bank normally gives you a steady schedule and the opportunity to impact the financial lives of the people in your community in a positive way. Many of the people I worked with were positive, helpful, and friendly.

    Cons

Management is poor and inconsistent. You are told one thing and then punished for doing what you are told. If you weren't personal friends with the Regional Manager there was nothing you could do to gain positive recognition (even if you and your branch were consistently ranked among the top in the bank). The atmosphere was incredibly unprofessional- communications and documents were poorly written, bank conferences were essentially booze fests and I know at least once a Regional Manager was smoking pot with some Branch Managers in one of the hotel rooms. God forbid you mention an error or try to proactively fix a mistake. If that were to happen a lecture would ensue.

    Advice to Management

Consistent standards and oversight of Regional Managers and Vice Presidents would be welcome. Stop trying to do more with less. Trying to expand market share and increase sales while reducing FTP only alienates high performing employees who are the ones who end up needing to do more with less. If there is fat to trim it is in the upper echelons of your corporate structure.

    Pros

Well-defined career paths. Managers and executives are very accessible. Strong benefits package (paid time off, 401k match, pension, etc).

    Cons

Bank is evolving from a smaller community bank to a larger regional bank. Some growing pains there.

I worked at NBT Bancorp full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good co-workers, decent hours, got promoted after 2 years but still not much compensation for that. Work hours were decent depending on which branch, Saturdays on and off only 9-12, no Sundays.

    Cons

Not feeling appreciated by upper management. Low pay for the stress you will endure, constantly cutting back FTE's to increase employees work load.

    Advice to Management

The pay is very low bottom 10% on average, make everyone feel more appreciated not just managers etc.

I worked at NBT Bancorp full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Was hired away from a local competitor and my thoughts and opinions were valued greatly. Management listens to what you think should be done in your market. I loved going to work every day, and always felt like I was actually making a difference to the company. They are growing and seem to be doing it in the right manner. Excellent salary with good benefits, including fair time off policies.

    Cons

none jump out at me - naturally like any company there are differences of opinions, but nothing serious while I was there. Sure, there were times that we didn't see some credit (loan) opportunities the same way, but that's why senior management is senior! They get to make some of the final decisions and it was my job to make them see it the way I did. You win some, you lose some, but overall the local decisions prevailed, which is very unlike the bigger banks where almost all decisions are made top down. Bravo "Marty", for creating a great team - both in Vermont and Norwich, NY.

    Advice to Management

Just keep listening to your people in the trenches. They know what works in their markets, and it's not always business-the-same in each small town that NBT operates in. You have some very talented people in all of your regions and the district presidents are excellent, and you should continue to give them more authority to make local decisions.
