I worked at NBTY as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

They (barely) paid my bills. But honestly, there were not many pros to working for this employer. Oh, they give you free near-expiry vitamins, protein, bars, and gummy vitamins. It's cute at first, but then it gets old.

    Cons

It was actually terrible and soul sucking to work for an evil vitamin manufacturer as a temp. I'm really happy it's over. They will pay you $20 an hour to format documents in a cubicle 7 hours a day, and if get sick or if everyone (permanent employees) gets a holiday, you lose each day you didn't choose to be absent's pay. And yes, it makes a large difference when you live on LI not having that extra $110 in your paycheck...

Also, over the 5 months I was there, I got a few emails about how the company is doing poorer than it expected

    Cons

Crowded, noisy cube farms. Inflexible. They watch your every move.

    Pros

Pretty good benefits, Free exercise classes, Holiday Bonus

    Cons

Lack of promotions, Too many managers, They will only offer lateral moves, Bought out by Carlysle Group and they tried to improve culture, instead it got much worse, Too many changes implemented leads to many frustrated employees trying to put out fires.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You should consider the talent you already have at your fingertips and make better use of them. Give promotions, incentive to work harder.

    Cons

Too much emphasis on associate indiscretions when we should be correcting system issues.

    I worked at NBTY full-time

    Pros

Very reasonable hours, especially if you are a manager. Managers are not expected to work tons of overtime. Computer system includes very accurate inventory amounts which is incredibly helpful. The stores are very easy to maintain as they are very organized, not over stocked (for the most part). If you apply yourself it is easy to advance. Employee discount is more than fair.

    Cons

Taking time off in a small store can be tricky but not a huge problem. Pay is a bit lower plus shared commission. The commission system is great for commission but it is still commission and unreliable pay. Stores are slow when sales aren't going on.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ditch the commission and pay a higher, more competitive wage.

I have been working at NBTY full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

This is a health and wellness company that actually promotes health and wellness amongst those that work here. They practice what they preach. There are lots of perks including exercise classes, health seminars, company picnic, fruit baskets, etc. It's a healthy, growing company that has come a long way over the years, from the founder's garage to an international company with an array of health related products.

    Cons

There aren't many "cons" to working here. There are several layers of management but that is to be expected from a company of this size. It's important for managers to listen to workers, and that communication has been improving.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lots of smart people work here. Intelligence is not the exclusive domain of the company leaders.
