Pros
Great healthcare benefits and very relaxed and friendly atmosphere. I personally don't consider this a "pro," but it is practically impossible to get fired, no matter how little work you do.
Cons
As with most government jobs, the salaries are abysmally low.
Advice to Senior Management
Encourage people to do their work, and penalize the many who do not.
Pros
Benefit package is good, but getting less so. Good if you like working with people needing a lot of services. Stable work, but less so than in the past.
Cons
Retirement benefits may lock you in at some point. Communication is poor from management on down. Few people in management/leadership positions that really understand the concepts involved in each. Promotion is often on who you know and seniority rather than performance.
Advice to Senior Management
Seek to be better managers and leaders. Take the time to understand what is necessary to lead your people and organization while seeking to make changes rather than be satisfied with the way things are and have probably always been.
Pros
Great work hours: 40-hours strict. You don't have to work over time at all at most positions. Definitely a great place if you have family with little kids. They used to have great retire benefits. In recent years, they've made quite a few changes. Unless you work for the state over 20 years, you will not get free medical insurance after you retire anymore. Good working environment: not much politics going on.
Cons
Salary is significantly below the market. There's not much room to grow professionally. No room for advancement because the Employer rarely creates positions, as everything is proved by grants and state budget. So you have recycle other people's positions. In comparison with private industry, people are less motivated to improve their skill set because you are very less likely to get a promotion.
Advice to Senior Management
Assess the competencies of workers. Some employees stay there for decades without feeling the need to improve their skills. If you cannot use Excel, you should not be working here, no matter how many years you've worked here. Sorry.
