Co-workers are often very down to earth, and are willing to cooperate in solving problems

The technology is somewhat conservative, but that is expected for supporting over 30-year-old databases
Advice to Senior Management
Should get employees more involved in company-wide issues, instead of giving them only the impression of doing so.

Cons
Technology not up-to-date, poor management, weak HR
Advice to Senior Management

Cons

Advice to Senior Management
NCR has many valuable employees who would welcome advancement and new opportunities.
As the organization gains momentum upgrading the employee training budget would be an great addition as the organization.
Pros
I think it's a good place for students as it offers shifts. The staff is friendly and down to earth in my department. Managers are approachable and listen. It's a collaborative environment. Ample free parking.
Cons
This is a company in a world of hurt. They have been cutting for years and it's still going on in 2011. Any company that has been around as long as this one has should not be in fire fighting mode, this one is. From what I can see, it's a dis-organization on the verge of collapse.
The training, or lack thereof was horrible, it's a sink or swim environment. Shifts are long and stressful due to lack of service personnel, i.e. technicians and service planners. There is a real lack of leadership from the district managers. Management needs to engage employees to better understand the issues. Pay is way too low for both technicians and service planners. There is no work life balance. It's a work you to death scenario at least in this department.
Advice to Senior Management
I believe this company is way too top heavy, the cuts should be coming from the top not the front line. The remaining employees are way too stretched and I believe the customers are suffering. The aggressive management style is leading this company to its demise while stroking the ego of a few who will make their mark and leave. Management has to wake up or face losing some very big accounts. The best thing you can do is fire your board of directors and take the company private. This will eliminate countless unnecessary positions and save the company millions. Once you no longer have to stroke the share holders you will be able to steer this ship back into the path of greatness. Good luck!
Pros
NCR offers the opportunity to develop and acquire work experience at a Fortune 500 firm. During the course of your career, you will be exposed to a people from a variety of cultural backgrounds, professional competencies and ethical frameworks.
Cons
NCR is a process driven bureaucracy that is often a dollar short and 5 minutes too late to realize a business opportunity. The culture has become myopic and toxic. The time horizons are limited to the quarter with little regard to long term consequences. Professional politicians rather than dedicated professionals have figured that if you "game" the system, you can rise within the ranks of management. Sadly, the management culture of NCR has led to a corporation in decline with bleak future prospects.
Advice to Senior Management
Read and reflect on the philosophy of J.H. Patterson.
Pros
Better than market salaries for management; most people are hardworking but are stymied by the inefficient confusing processes. Good products and service delivery organization who strive to meet customer expectations. Mostly friendly atmosphere but very corporate - expect to spend many many hours in meetings and preparing information for management.
Cons
expect minimum 60 hour workweek up to 80 hours +. Senior management in US makes random re-orgs using nepotism and favorites to fill positions for which candidates have zero experience and wonder why it does not improve. Former and recent layoffs, as with most companies, mean all must be accomplished with less leaving a stress-out, exhausted team who have lost processes and procedures due to laid off employees. Operating systems are archaic and cannot support the business. As with many US run organizations, Canada operations are not understood and repeated attempts to squish round pegs in square holes results in inefficient and bizarre instructions for the canadian operation.
Advice to Senior Management
Change for the sake of change will not lead to improvements. Support the people you have and you will see results.
