    Pros

Ability to grow from within is great and company culture is top notch. NECAM seems to be growing in the channel segment.

    Cons

Direct side is in flux. Every 2-3 years they try and re-invent the wheel.

    Advice to Management

Get strong Japanese leadership back in the US.

    Pros

Unique and compelling Brand and some of the hardest working people in the industry.

    Cons

They tend to spend more on innovation than on Marketing.

    Advice to Management

When cutting cost, consider keeping critical functions rather than simply reducing payroll.

Great people, but floundering executive team & parent company misdirection

I worked at NEC Corporation of America full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The employees are hardworking and generally act well in teams. Lots of good people at this company. Very good benefits. Salaries in most functions seem competitive to local market.

    Cons

Executives are struggling to understand how to move the business forward in the US, and the Japanese parent has a lot of control. There is not a well-developed strategy; the company has a revenue goal in mind with no actual plan how to get there. Significant lack of marketing expertise and budget. Many of the products are outdated and not competitive in today's market - which is interesting because the parent company has a lot of innovative new products that could be sold in the US if only there was an actual strategy or marketing plan.

    Advice to Management

Create a documented and articulated strategy. Modify the executive team to incorporate more collaboration, teamwork and strategic thinking (esp. in your Biometrics area). Get a Strategy & Marketing VP (not just "go to market" tactical people). Stand up to your parent company - which you can't do until you have an actual plan (see sentence number 1).

I worked at NEC Corporation of America full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Management always communicates with you, benefits & pay were decent and company believes in a balance between work & family. If you are looking for a lot of overtime, this company is not for you. I loved working for NEC and would recommend NEC to any of my friends.

    Cons

I really did not experience any cons while I was working at NEC.

    Advice to Management

My only advice is, don't stop communicating to your employees and never take away the balance of work & family life. You will end up with a great team that will give you a 100%.

Biometrics Division: Great technology, abysmal management

I worked at NEC Corporation of America full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Excellent benefits in terms of medical, retirement, and time off. Engaging technology applied to meaningful work.

    Cons

Non-existent leadership in the Biometrics group has fostered an environment where engineers seek little more than autonomy creating an office culture that is cold and divided when it could be collaborative and transparent. Management habitually dissuades best practices in favor of recklessly pushing toward the next deliverable. This has led this group to be continually stuck (for years) in a pattern of urgently delivering poor quality solutions to increasingly frustrated customers. If you understand the concept of "technical debt" and strive to avoid it you will likely be extremely disappointed in this environment. No particular software development process or approach is implemented. "Requirements" typically consist of a single, vague sentence copied from the Statement of Work (SOW) which inevitably leads to late-stage rework cycles often lasting years. Eventually the customers become so frustrated (and vocal) that features not in the SOW are requested/demanded and the Biometrics group is forced to cave to avoid further damage to their reputation. The newly requested features are then typically provided for free and, as requirements are once again not gathered, implementing the new solutions also suffers from the above late-stage rework cycle. As a result, many projects finish well above budget and nearly all solutions are delivered well late of the originally proposed deadline. These faults have led many of the more talented and professional developers to leave for greener pastures in recent years.

    Advice to Management

Be active in managing your employees. Learn about modern software development practices and ask the difficult questions about the roles of messaging channels and stakeholder incentives. Perform proper requirements gathering or explicitly allocate resources to do so; your customers deserve to have their needs understood and met. Focus on this concept: Removing the immediate impediment for your employees is not as valuable, or effective, as removing the cause of that impediment.
