My boss is the best. I could not get better anywhere else!!!

    Cons

I don't feel the upper managerment knows and understands what it is we do in field operations. I feel we also lack in sales department.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

don't just listen to the upper management, listen to the little people that do the work and make the company run.

I have been working at NEC Unified Solutions full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

International corporation with lots of opportunity to grow into chosen career path. Access to latest technologies. Great location. Beautiful building. Free parking. Nice people.

    Cons

Danger of getting lost in the crowd. Large International corporate structure with lots of layers of management & politics. Recently eliminated long term option to bank vacation time which was a key perk and make working at company less desirable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Top management either in Japan or directly reports to Japan which often creates communication disconnect. Eliminate some of the administrative red tape. Rethink employee benefits before chopping them.

    Pros

Stable client base provides job security; streamlined operation valuing each specialized member; personal visit from President is not uncommon.

    Cons

I worked through a temporary agency and the openings for full time, permanent positions are sparse due to the efficient and specialized warehouse operations.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

No one Else Compares - NEC is a great company with a great future! Only suggestion is written or online manuals for training to accelerate any temporary worker's proficiency.

I worked at NEC Unified Solutions

    Pros

Large company perks for most employees. Mostly nice offices and respectful environment. The parking was covered, and the basic support systems were nothing to brag about but reasonable.

    Cons

Management style (and incompetence) straight from the 1950's. It was surprising how many of the senior level executives turned a blind eye to gross misuse of company money. Some of the major boondoggles were beyond the pale. Flying 1st class on company money and hosting party meals for dozens of friends is not in itelf a bad thing. However, misrepresenting the purpose and/or need destroys upper management's credibility and brings it's character into question.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give subordinates opportunity to rate superiors on leadership each quarter.

    Pros

Japanese management always interested in hearing about company issues, both negitive and postive.
    Excellent employee benefits.
Products are some of the best in the telecom industry.
Lot's dedicated employees with long tenure and company specific job knowledge.

    Cons

There seemed to be a gap between the vision the Japanese have for the company and the way the American executive management team struggles to implement the aforementioned vision.

From my perspective the American executive management team was weak and lacked the telephony knowledge and experience to lead NEC Unified Solutions. That's not to say there were no knowledgeable managers or Directors at Unified but what was lacking was (is) strong leadership from the President and some of the Vice Presidents.

A company like Unified cannot be managed like a democracy, someone has to be in charge and willing to make hard decisions, Unified lacks the leadership necessary to pull the management team together and have the company working towards common goals. Constant reorganization and reduction in force are signs of weak leadership.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Set goals and filter those goals down through the company.
Get to know your Vice Presidents, directors and managers and what their doing, or what their not doing.
Talk to your customers and channel partners on a regular bases and listen to the issues they're experiencing when dealing with Unified.
If Unified is going to be a direct sales and service company for much longer then changes have to be made that support that direction.
