I have been working at NHS as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

Training and assisting medical staff on new changes to the patient management system

    Cons

Most users find change to the system quite daunting and needed time to get use to new changes. Especially agency staff

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To make more time for agency staff to recieve training rather than rely on medical staff currently working through other duties while the wards are understaffed.

I have been working at NHS full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

I have really enjoyed working for the National Health Service which from its early days in 1948 has developed into a model of health care that Britain can be proud of. Many countries around the world could benefit from a similar system.

    Cons

As with all large organisations, communications may sometimes take time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It is important that the N.H.S. has the best value for money in terms of obtaining supplies; some companies rip off the N.H.S. and so the cost to the tax payer rises 'exponentially'.

I worked at NHS full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Lots of opportunity for locum work, job security, routine lifestyle and decent compensation. Well respected work outside of the hospital, and opportunity to meet some inspirational people

    Cons

Unmotivated staff, lots of locum staff who don't know what they are doing, lots of people taking sick days or taking advantage of the system. Very PC environment but most staff with low morale

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

do more to retain decent staff and discourage hiring of people who have no experience or motivation. Language or being foreign not an issue, but competence is - having someone who doesn't know what they are doing on a higher locum payscale than regulars is demoralising

I worked at NHS as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

I was paid very well for what I was doing. I was on a great team with really helpful and friendly colleagues. My manager was a kind and generous person who was very concerned for our welfare.

    Cons

I sometimes had to work unsociable hours to accomodate staff who did not work during normal hours. Often had to rechedule things multiple times due to unforseen scheduling conflicts.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I noticed a lot of people working really hard who complained about not getting recognition for it, and others who pretended to work hard but did not and getting away with it which was a detriment to the morale of their colleagues.
