Incredible Opportunity for Growth and Advancement

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at NIC

ProsThe company really values its employees, and works hard to promote from within and advance the careers of its employees. Lots of opportunities exist for advancement, especially if you're willing to move to another state.

ConsDue to close connections with local government offices, hours are not as flexible as in some software development companies. It's not a big deal for the most part, but you can't generally work unusual hour or telecommute.

It's the best place I've ever worked

Project Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at NIC

ProsCompany has a culture of viewing their employees as a very valuable resource. Our portal allows very flexible working conditions where possible. My experience with management at our portal as well as other managers from other portals is that they treat persons of all positions equally. The company supports having fun and enjoying work.

ConsThey could use more HR over-site in many areas. I'm sure it's difficult being spread out but believe ;they could use more people, especially since they are the administrator for the health insurance program. I would like to see more over site in how promotions are handled.

Advice to Senior ManagementDifficult to say as we are so spread out. Most of us are not at corporate. Different portals are ran differently.

Great environment, compelling business model and terrific coworkers.

Project Manager (Current Employee)
Madison, WI

I have been working at NIC full-time for more than a year

ProsThe work is challenging without being stressful, the company has tons of experience to draw on, and offices actually share expertise and ideas.

ConsSalaries are good but only about the middle-of-the-road for the web industry. Working with government can sometimes be infuriatingly slow. The company is not great at thought leadership around web tech and devices.

Advice to Senior ManagementUpdate the intranet. Provide a better more reliable technical infrastructure, and invest in more mobile devices or offer a BYOD program; we need to look like we're leading-edge in tech.

Product Manager

Project Manager (Former Employee)

I worked at NIC full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGreat leadership and corporate culture. Individual offices have a lot of autonomy so you have to make sure you get in with a good group.

ConsOnly client is State government so the process can move slowly and it can get very monotonous. Its not the most interesting client to work with at times.

Good Company to Join

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at NIC full-time

ProsWork that you do has a very visible impact in the target area.
Company CEO is more accessible then most.
Benefits of a small team locally with support of large team for common functions.
since local teams are smallish, you get to learn and do much more.

ConsSome positions such as software development have little to no advancement opportunities since you are almost always going to be only dealing and doing things locally.

Advice to Senior ManagementBetter communications between local teams to share knowledge and experience would be great.
