I have been working at NIH full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The ability to conduct science is unrivaled at NIEHS. The core facilities and expertise and equipment available are fantastic. In addition, the salary is typically better than .edu postdoc positions and the health insurance is free for you and your family and is better than the FTE government insurance.

    Cons

Make sure you branch out and identify good mentors, as well as take advantage of the numerous networking functions. It can be easy to get lost in the crowd if you aren't serious about your postdoc.

Former Intern - Summer Research Fellow in Research Triangle Park, NC

I worked at NIH as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Flexible scheduling, some PIs and researchers are excellent mentors and will definitely help you with your project and help you get published if you really push for it and express interest, and their internship program has talks about different areas of research

    Cons

It really depends on your research team what kind of experience you'll have, sometimes PIs are really unavailable or really restrictive on your independence

    Pros

    Good salary for post docs
    Excellent research facility
Good health insurance for employers and their families
    Great working environment
    Salary increase every year

    Cons

Post doctoral fellows have to relocate to a new job after 5 years of fellowship. Not many opportunities available for job prospects within the organization.
