Pros
Great product!
Design, develop and commercialize product for the best athletes in the world
Opportunity to work with virtual teams around the world
Cons
If you work hard your work may be recognized
If you know the right people your WILL be promoted no matter how much you suck at what you do
Advice to Senior Management
You reorganize, change, reshuffle but at the end of the day is a musical chair game, good positions are given to the usual suspects, and you can only advance if you are friends with the usual suspects
Pros
Working for Nike has many benefits. To name a few I would include; Physical work environment at WHQ, Very bountiful PTO, A very generous 401k, energetic co-workers in many of the departments. These are just a few of the benefits. Just check out Nikebiz.org to find out more.
Cons
Not everyone is energetic, and some are resistant from moving away from their comfort zones. Not all job positions fit within the 9 to 5, Monday thru Friday work week. For those that work the shift work positions work / life balancing can be a challenge.
Advice to Senior Management
Your people are what make the company great. The great product is the side benefit of having great people. If you’re not treating your people with respect and recognition what kind of work are you getting in return? Is it the best the employee can give or are they going to do just enough to be successful?
Support your Leads as they often find themselves sandwiched between the management , the rest of the employees, and potential customers as well as filling in when to other work not within their scope completed when people call off. Sometimes performing double if not triple duty.
Pros
Benefits
Gym
Slacker's paradise if you find the right job and hide, or enjoy talking in cirlcles about nothing in meetings all day without any tangible action.
Cons
athletes are given preferential treatement. For example, someone was promoted to a job they were not qualified for over someone who had the necessary experience, simply because the unqualified person was an avid runner and the qualified person was not an athlete.
job evaluations very subjective, management too busy to real know what's going on and bases things on superficial understanding. People who manage up well get away with talking big but not contributing anything tangible, while others are held behind the scenes and do all the dirty work and get little credit.
difficult to make things happen, need everyone's buy in, managers shoot down ideas that are not their own to avoid making it look like people beneath them have better ideas than them.
VP of Ecommerce has no sense of reality. Poor communicator, horrible people skills, nobody wants to work for him. Doesn't understand Ecommerce and barks at people to chase down his scrambled and ill advised thoughts that incoherently do not connect to a strategy.
Advice to Senior Management
Fire VP of Ecommerce and find someone who has a better understanding of the business and more people skills. People do not stay motivated if all you do is whip them to do more and forget to feed them.
Pros
Beautiful campus
Exciting company to work for
Awesome culture
Cons
The size of the company makes it hard to get things accomplished
Hiring process is too politcal
Advice to Senior Management
Keep doing what you're doing
Pros
Great place to gain experience.
Work hard, play hard (You will really work hard more then play!)
Cons
Hard work will not move you forward
Boys Club
Senior Management diversity is very small
Advice to Senior Management
Go back to being true! Back in the 80's to late 90s you used to want to stand for something, but now it is all about moving forward to $27B. Don't bastardize the brand for a buck. Going back to 'Just doing it'
Pros
The campus has the right amenities. Employee benefits are average amoung other large companies. If you like to socialize, this is definitely the right place to work.
Cons
Too many collaborative meetings. NIke offers "stretch" assignments for those interested in moving into other career areas, however these assignments are are infrequent and usually only provided to a chosen few.
Advice to Senior Management
Upper management spends too much time in the succession planning process of directors and above and very little focus is on other employee careers. Employee careers are left in the hands of the employees. Implementing workforce analytics would provide better insight into strengths, improved utilization, and career planning throughout the human capital structure.
Pros
Best reasons to work at Nike include benefits and up until the last couple of years was a fairly stable place to work.
If your young that is a plus to work at Nike.
Cons
Several Nike Golf Managers are very incompetent and have the attitude of "Hey everyone look at me and what I have done" and tend not to support and or grow employees. Managers talk about being a "team player" during the annual review process to the employees they manage, however there day to day behavior is contradicting.
No retirement benefits/pension
Advice to Senior Management
Review who you have sitting in middle management seats and asses if it might be time to refresh positions, the golf environment has changed is changing constantly around you but you still are doing business as you did 2, 5, and 10 years ago in some cases.
Moral is low --- Time to change the air freshener!
Pros
Nice enviroment to work and have a good balance with your personal roles
Cons
You need to have a strong matrix connections to be promoted
Advice to Senior Management
Promote more equal opportunities based on experience and not by who knows who
Pros
informality, culture, benefits, portland lifestyle, cost of living, creative, exciting, midas
Cons
insular, cultish, you have to be a jock to really do well, very subjective, no processes, depends on who you know, opportunities are inconsistently awarded, you have to be the right type, no communication on performance, company takes its time and does not care about yours
Advice to Senior Management
fix the cons
Pros
amazing benefits, great company, collaborative team environment, extremely smart colleagues. Always encouraged to look for advacement, though it can be a challenge to achieve, it's all about networking here. Once you are in you are in, hard to get laid off or fired, Nike really invests in their employees
Cons
Definitely a boys club, very much if you know so and so you can advance (sometimes), somewhat of a cult like environment, can feel a bit too much like college. Nonetheless, none of these cons would ever preclude me from working here. The biggest Con is the location: Portland OR. That's the main and really only reason I left. Would love to come back at another location.
Advice to Senior Management
promotions based on tenure and connections can be touch to swallow, definitely continue to promote and foster employees in getting to the next level.
