I worked at NTN Buzztime full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The pay is ok and there are some very talented people working there. On the surface it seems good.

    Cons

Management that changes it's mind on direction almost weekly. No shared goals. HR department is a joke and run by self serving consultant. Product team is just an extension of its biggest customers requirements (buffalo wild wings) while other customers wait for sloppy seconds. Senior management doesn't stay very long.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cut your losses and move on to the next thing. This ship has sailed and you have missed it.

    I worked at NTN Buzztime

    Pros

Some very smart and fun people on the mid-level that are willing to teach. Most bosses are flexible about appointments and schedules.

    Cons

Upper management changes their minds a lot. People are randomly let go so that the company can "move forward."

I have been working at NTN Buzztime full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Very friendly and welcoming employees at all levels of the company. There have been a number of positive changes in the past 6 months, and you can feel the excitement about the future of Buzztime.

    Cons

I think there is still some work to be done to get everyone on the same page. It still feels like there are people going in opposite directions, however, I think it's getting better every day.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to improve relations with your employees. Without them, you have no company. They can and will be your biggest advocate if they are allowed to be a part of the success.

I have been working at NTN Buzztime full-time

    Pros

Over the last 10 years, Buzztime has been pillaged by a dysfunctional board of directors that ran their cronies through the C suite every few years. About 4 years ago the current Chairman, Jeff Berg, started buying stock on the open market. He's consolidated his ownership to about 25%, remade the board out of serious executives, and capitalized the company to a level it hasn't seen in decades. After his first two CEO's didn't make it (for different reasons), he took it upon himself to sit in the seat until he figured it out. He's keeping the interim-next to his CEO title because he's self-aware enough to know he's not the right person for the job permanently, but he's also accountable enough to do the job until he finds the right person. He's also humble enough never to say any of this himself.

Jeff has also taken a page from Jeff Bezos (like him or not) and is telling investors and shareholders that the company is investing in its products and its future, removing some of the quarter to quarter pressure that leads to bad decisions in public companies. A new long-term deal with Buffalo Wild Wings, a more modern tablet-based system, and some fresh energy from dynamic new hires have transformed Buzztime in the short time I have been here.

    Cons

If you are not comfortable in an environment undergoing rapid cultural change, then Buzztime might not be a good environment for you. The market for tablet-based consumer solutions in restaurants is young and evolving. The competition is growing. There's a lot of insecurity that comes with working at a place like this. If you are unsure of the value you are bringing, you should probably steer clear.

There are quite a few people, even in senior roles, that avoid accountability. I guess that occurs in many companies, but it seems endemic here. New hires will need to hold themselves, and be willing to hold their co-workers and even their superiors, accountable. That can be easier said than done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to continue to break down the communication silos, and be patient enough with their strategies to let them take hold. You've got plenty of money in the bank now, so the only thing stopping Buzztime from dropping the "so much potential" moniker and becoming a successful enterprise is people. Keep bringing in the level of people who have joined in the last 6-12 months and continue to weed out the weak performers.

I have been working at NTN Buzztime full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good coworkers. Some smart, nice people who work here. Interesting product and industry. Central location that is easy to find.

    Cons

Terrible management. Senior leaders change out every two years or less... consistent for the past 10 years. CEO doesn't seem to want to be there. They like to say that you must be ok with "change," but really you must be ok with the constant state of massive disarray in all areas. New leaders come in and want to put their stamp on things, which ends up repeating what was done four years ago. Rinse and repeat. Many people, including senior leaders, are actually "consultants" who don't really care, or who just work remotely.

Sales strategy is to recycle last year's plan. They lose more customers than they acquire, and have done so for the past few years.

Office environment is very gloomy. Nobody is happy here. Ask any recruiter in San Diego County that has worked with Buzztime, they will not paint a pretty picture. Extremely high turnover.

It is actually surprising this company still functions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find the few people who really care and/or are talented and get rid of the rest. Don't just hire your friends or former coworkers, as they will be recycled when the new senior leaders come in. Find sales leadership that knows how to develop a new strategy. Get an MBA school to do an entire thesis on the company, maybe that will help.
