I worked at NUST part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

NUST is a great place to work. Good environment. In my Reasearch Assistant job timings were very flexible and less. Environment is very good and labs are great.

    Cons

As it was funded project, salary was less and fixed. It was being funded from HEC. If the funds are late, so will be the salary. And then salary got late so many months and then I found out that HEC stopped funding the project. So be very cautious when getting job on a funded project.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take care of the salaries of employees.

I have been working at NUST full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Low teaching load as compared to other universities so you do get a time for your own R&D activities !

    Cons

+ Military/Retired military run university, so at times the policies that are actually meant to improve R&D impact are actually detrimental for the same
+ Career growth for civilians is limited
+ Increments and Gratuities are not given on time
+ Centralized control of NUST over its colleges slows down the procurement processes for R&D activities

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

+ Please hire professional academic managers to run the universities

Former Employee - Lecturer in Islamabad, Islamabad (Pakistan)

I worked at NUST full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Government funded research labs, bright students, good for a maximum of one year stay.

    Cons

Military style management. If you know higher-ups personally, you'll grow. Insufficient compensation. University rules and regulations discourage research environment via meager staff salaries despite heavy investment on research labs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring in qualified civilian management on top. Stop saving money on management staff by hiring retired army officers. The foreign qualified human resource should be paid salaries that match international scales otherwise the brain drain will continue.

I have been working at NUST full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

You will find excellent faculty at NUST and extremely hardworking staff

    Cons

All key seats are filled (occupied) by Armed forced personals, most of them are playing their 2nd innings after their retirements and therefore cannot understand the needs of their employees. Above all the people on top management are not PhD and have nothing to do with academia or research.
