Building a solid career here is quite difficult and beyond the reach of most engineers.

Former Employee - Design Engineer in San Jose, CA

I worked at NXP full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The hours are flexible and the work is somewhat unstructured. Your boss does not control all of your time if you are an engineer. At one point, independent work on patentable ideas was encouraged. The work can be challenging, with interesting projects, if you are so lucky as to get one.

    Cons

The benefits and pay are below average. If your group vice president does not like you or your work, you will be fired, rather than offered the opportunity to improve. There is no training or career path development. If you are not fired, you will be stuck in one job the entire time you are employed there. There are no promotions or growth opportunities. For engineers, the tools are below average and the availability of servers is way below average.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lead people, don't bully them. Provide opportunities for professional growth and development. Give your people the chance to make the right mistakes. If you fire everyone who has made a mistake, soon no one will be working there and no one will want to.

I have been working at NXP full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Chance to work on bleeding-edge technology.
    Friendly international atmosphere.
Market leader in the chosen market segments.

    Cons

HR policy means almost every engineer receives the same salary. No chances to earn more through extra effort, etc.
Staff turnover extremely low (not only leaving the company but also no internal movements). Promotion prospects non-existent. If you are happy with a 9-5 job and are not ambitious then this is probably the company for you.
You could say that NXP is a fur-lined rut - comfortable, one-track, difficult to get yourself out of. Only the CEO and the Business Unit managers are worth a damn: the rest of upper-management are on an ego-trip and quite useless. Mid-level management came up decades ago as expert engineers and lack man-management skills.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remove HR dept - they are worse than useless.
Make job changes much easier - introduce some dynamism - many people have been doing the same job for decades and have become very stale.
Give mid-level managers some people-management training.

I have been working at NXP full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Engineers here are typically older which has it's disadvantages for a younger person, but also means that they all have wealth of knowledge to give out. Work environment is very collaborative and flexible. Salary for a person fresh out of college was better than expected.

    Cons

Benefits seem to be more expensive than other places, no stock options in the job offer, different business lines are segmented off so you will work in the same building as people everyday but never meet them (though this is probably true for any bigger company).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate better. Upper management seems to show interest on improving things but there can be better communication.

Former Employee - Field Applications Engineer

    I worked at NXP full-time

    Pros

NXP has good products; they need to broaden some of the product lines. Most of the people are good, stand-up folks and enjoyable to work with.

    Cons

During my tenure, the communication flow was bottoms up instead of top down as I thought it should be; very frustrating- too much time spent writing reports for upward communication.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More downward communication to inform employees of direction of the company and products.

    Pros

work life balance, flexi time, switching departents

    Cons

Architects and old senior people only can survive by tactics and other people find themselves unsecure.no roadmap

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

work on insecurity. and don't treat a nice guy as a threat to you if he is better then you.
