    Pros

Great networking with other HIV/AIDS experts and workers in the city and state of New York.
Flexible vacation time and sick days
Excellent internship if you have limited knowledge of HIV

Best part of the job was 1. having it on my resume 2. networking to find the next job I had

    Cons

I worked for the medical director but he was never there...he spent most of his time abroad. This led to little mentorship or connection and increased miscommunication!

I worked at NY Health Department as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Lots of offices, lots of experienced people. Flexibility to move between bureaus/departments if desired. Involved in a lot of current research, and staff has a lot of opportunities to attend training and participate in other types of professional development.

    Cons

Parking is awful at their Albany, NY location and the waiting list for parking is very long. The building is secured so it can take longer to get up to your office after fire drills or a lunch time. Approval for projects has to go through so many levels because it is a government agency.

I worked at NY Health Department

    Pros

You don't have to go above and beyond because nobody else does

    Cons

Since not a profit making venture or at all capitalist, people who should be fired are put up with, moved around etc. Also, fiscal environment is VERY bad- people who retire or leave are not replaced.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize talent and get rid of employees who are dead weight, not reliable etc.

I have been working at NY Health Department

    Pros

good working environment, very nice coworkers, good place to accumulate experience and improve skills, access to statewide data and latest technologies, good work-life balance

    Cons

work atmosphere is not exciting enough, many people around spent too much time talking about retirement benefits, not good enough for long term career growth

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire people who care more about work than retirement, which could be hard though for management, considering that improved performance and work pressure are not good for health.
