I worked at Naartjie Kids full-time

    Pros

Loved the styles of the clothing. They were easy to sell. The company had a family feel. The benefits were very expensive and the health care didn't cover a lot.

    Cons

Not enough hours to staff the store. The merchants in the buying office were out of touch with the stores.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It's too late...They should have listened to the store managers regarding styles and they open stores in the wrong areas.
That caused the company to go bankrupt

    Pros

Great environment to work in. The company is small, compared to other retailers, so you get to know everyone pretty well, including people in corporate.

    Cons

No room for advancement. They promise and promise to promote you, but never actually do.

    Pros

I loved the collaborative sharing of ideas and then taking the ideas on as projects to implement. I loved the people I worked with.

    Cons

Financial resources can be limited to be able to implement projects.
No raises due to financial constraints.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be willing to give raises to your salaried people since they are the most loyal.

I have been working at Naartjie Kids

    Pros

I really enjoy the brand that I'm promoting when I'm on the salesfloor. The clothes wear beautifully and are unique; sharing that opinion with customers allows me to connect with them much easier. I also have a great relationship with my boss, but that has nothing to do with brand!

    Cons

Unfortunately, our store is ridiculously small, and it seems like we get sent much more clothes than we could ever possibly fit!

I have been working at Naartjie Kids full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Attainable goals, great corporate leadership (director of stores especially), family first attitude, no reason to work overtime to keep your store looking great, great feedback/encouragement from upper management, adorable clothing, fantastic clients, clean stores, happy employees for the most part.

    Cons

Lack of consistency in accountability. There are established rules, but no consequences for those that don't follow them. It makes a manager that follows the rules quite frustrated.

There is a "cheap" or penny pinching attitude to every aspect of the company. All positions are vastly underpaid, (which you sort of don't mind when you only work your 40 hours and go home), but managers are expected to generate sales through grass roots marketing with NO marketing budget and a very tight payroll schedule. The result is that we end up marketing the company in our free time when that should be time reserved for family. It's not work that requires us to be in store, but we should be able to unplug when we leave.

Communication between corporate and the field is atrocious. The left hand NEVER knows what the right hand is doing.

Product is beyond precious, but has some major issues.

District Trainers are expected to travel to train new managers and are offered no pay increase.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest more in your talent. A lot of the communication has felt crafty and like a carrot being dangled in front of me. I like encouragement, but I like it more when it's backed up by something, like a promotion or a pay raise.

I shouldn't feel like I'm working harder than other people at my level for the same amount of pay.
