I worked at Namco Bandai Games America full-time

ProsIt's a video game company.

ConsThey're too scared to take risks.

Advice to Senior ManagementSpend a little money & get good leaders. Change the way you think about making video games. Your ideologies are dated.

When I worked for this company, it was called Namco Networks America Inc in San Jose, not the Santa Clara location.

Senior Producer (Former Employee)
San Jose, CA

I worked at Namco Bandai Games America full-time for more than 3 years

ProsThe people in the trenches were a pleasure to work with.
The company was a great place to work from 2004 - 2006.
Picked up some really great experience which really helped catapult my career.

Cons* Compensation could have been better, but that was probably because this was my first job out of college.
* I don't think management always made the best business and strategy decisions and thus the Mobile and Downloadable Games division of the company I worked for was shut down and folded into the Console division after I left.
* Hiring standards got really lax as time went on.
* The games were driven by sales and marketing rather than design and what's fun.
* There was definitely an inner circle who ran the show. If you were a leader who disagreed with the inner circle, you were let go. This happened to one of my managers who was trying to affect positive change, but was seen as a threat.
* Politics

Advice to Senior ManagementTheir mobile business started off great. Then they weren't quick enough to adapt to the changes in the industry.

Ok As a Stepping Stone

QA Tester (Former Employee)
Santa Clara, CA

I worked at Namco Bandai Games America as a contractor for less than a year

ProsYou'll be able to network, the community of QA testers in the bay area is not that large. Many of us know one another directly/indirectly.

ConsTest plans seemed poorly thought out and managed.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore training for your leads

ConsEmployees somewhat under-qualified. Playing politics more than doing their jobs.

Fun in the beginning, but tougher as it went on.

Associate Localization Producer (Current Employee)
San Jose, CA

I have been working at Namco Bandai Games America full-time for more than 3 years

ProsVery fun work environment, creating a product that has a lot of name recognition. Many opportunities to travel for business. Changing projects always kept things interesting.

ConsNegative and jaded coworkers with little patience. Too many people out for themselves which results in lack of teamwork between departments.

Advice to Senior ManagementValue your employee for what they can do and celebrate them for their strengths. Don't try to pigeonhole them into a narrowly defined set of standards.

Satisfying at first, but ultimately re-affirmed that bad decisions in upper management will always have repercussions.

QA Lead (Former Employee)
San Jose, CA

I worked at Namco Bandai Games America full-time for more than a year

ProsMany established game properties that are world renowned.

ConsLack of focus and management is unwilling to seriously listen to department heads or suggestions. A lot of outsourcing also.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry not to outsource to countries that don't have a gaming culture. Rebuild from the foundation of the company and get rid of those who ultimately made decisions that cost the company good workers and money.

ProsSmall Office, Friendly employees, Insight to the Gaming industry, great resume builder.

ConsNot much room to move up in the company. There are people that have been QA Leads for over 10 years.

Advice to Senior ManagementThink of the tasks that you place with your employees. Have you fully explained this task to them? Have they received adequate training in order to complete the task accurately?

Namco is an OK game company to get your foot into the game industry door. DO NOT expect much.

Producer (Former Employee)
San Jose, CA

I worked at Namco Bandai Games America

ProsName Brand recognition. A publisher that has been around for awhile.

Cons- Poor Management.
- Very junior people steering this big ship.
- A Japanese company with Japanese business philosophy in America = BAD decisions.
- Management unwilling to listen to the employees.
- No chances / forward thinking mentality.
- Will not spend their money of GOOD talent. Instead, they hire lots of junior experienced people.
- Lack of creativity and overall experience.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire industry experienced people that know what they're doing and quit complaining that it's the employees fault.
