I have been working at National Cancer Institute full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great place to do research. Constant improvement of personal education with meetings, lectures, seminars, and exchange with the best experts from around the world.

    Cons

Very hard to stay beyond 8 years. Pay is lower that in the private sector. Too many colleagues come only to spend 2 or 3 years; this makes difficult to make a long term scientific plan.

I have been working at National Cancer Institute full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Good, Smart and hardworking( for the most part) people.

    Cons

Limited opportunities for growth. Unethical hiring practices- senior managers hire their children and trade favors for getting their children promoted. Very much an old boys club mentality. Abuses of special hiring authorities. Effort, Skill and talent are of very little import it is who you know that matters most.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Revamp your hiring practices and standards- stop allowing talented employees to leave because your refuse to promote people are not interchangeable the people who are leaving have years of knowledge and a solid understanding of the work that is done in your divisions and offices and when you allow them to leave because you refuse to promote all that training and money you have invested in them walks out the door.

I worked at National Cancer Institute as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Flexibility in projects and research assignments. Great pay! Great way to make connections and open doors to opportunities. Casual environment and supportive atmosphere.

    Cons

Must work hard to graduate from one job/assignment to the next. Many seem to not care about the amount of hours they have to be there unless invested in a major project. Training is sometimes vague and rushed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure to give interns more room for personal growth so they could find what interests them best. Add more variety to assignments and recommend attending seminars whenever possible.
