    I worked at National Child Traumatic Stress Network full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    The organization represents an important mission and the Network members are dedicated to raising the standard of care for children who have experienced trauma. Decent work-life balance, time-off, and benefits. Compensation typical of an academic institution.

    Cons

    Highly political environment that favors specific individuals. Many people are unhappy with their positions. Management struggles to deliver a clear and consistent message. The organizational culture could use improvement and there is not a path for advancement created for employees. Often, if you don't possess a PhD you will be treated as less than.

    Advice to Management

    Increase the voice of middle management, invest in younger employees who can carry forward the work, break down organizational silos, clear and transparent communication, develop a secondary traumatic stress policy for staff.

    Pros

    The gifted and dedicated national network of trauma professionals working to improve the care of children who have been through trauma.

    Cons

    Fractured management by the bifurcated National Center for Child Traumatic Stress (at Duke and UCLA). Terrible internal communication. Flat organizational structure with a critical lack of middle management at UCLA offices. Lack of internal protocols or standard operating procedures for most basic management tasks. General lack of professional respect for non-PhD staffers.

    Advice to Management

    Invest more time and resources into building an adequate support staff at the UCLA office and strive for greater transparency across the two branches of the National Center. Stop asking academicians to perform tasks best conducted by people with business management experience. Establish a "corporate culture" that values the contributions of the non-doctoral level staffers who are working in the trenches with Network members.
