If you want to keep your sanity, don't take a job here

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Northborough, MA

I worked at National Grid USA full-time for more than 10 years

ProsNot much anymore. It used to be a great company to work for until they moved their headquarters to Waltham. I worked for 25 years and it was great, the last two years before I quit were horrible.
Good pay if you've worked there a long time

ConsTreated like you are a child by supervisors. Ridiculous codes to enter to account for every second that you have to be away from your desk which is highly discouraged anyways. Forget about talking to your fellow employees, if you have a conversation for more than 1 minute even if its about work, the supervisor is right there to ask if there is a problem. Everything you do is monitored which doesn't lead to good moral. Very little positive feedback, all you get is complaints about how much more you should be doing even though you are now doing the work three people used to do since half your department has either taken other jobs or quit. The pay is terrible for a new hire. During the last two years of my career I felt like I worked in a sweatshop.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat your people like human beings not like robots. You would get much more production out of employees by not monitoring their every move. Under the current system of monitoring people,it makes people feel like they've done something wrong and its demeaning.

Interesting company, great mission, sometimes can get caught up in too many initiatives going on (need to prioritize)

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at National Grid USA full-time for more than 10 years

ProsAbility to move cross functionally for career development, ability to be part of some innovative energy actions, pay OK

ConsLeadership needs to align on priorities, need to make sure global priorities are in line with US, need to re-look at internal successors/talent vs external in terms of pay and align closer

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Finally found a home

Senior Analyst (Current Employee)
Brooklyn, NY

I have been working at National Grid USA full-time for more than 3 years

ProsFirst company I worked for where layoffs are rare. And when they did occur, they treated employees with respect and dignity. Annual employee surveys are conducted and sincere attempts are made to fix what's broken.

ConsAppears to be an overuse of contractors to keep headcount levels down.

Advice to Senior ManagementExcellent communication exists with one exception. More transparency is needed regarding how and why employees advance and can advance to middle and senior management levels.

Not all it's cracked up to be!

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Syracuse, NY

I have been working at National Grid USA full-time for more than 10 years

ProsGreat pay - gotta give 'em that much!

ConsHmmmm...where to start??? Speaking only for my department: the management does not care, simply put. They are sexist (all males), they do not hold people accountable (make others pick up the slack or fix problems created by others, in and out of this department), won't back their employees or stand up for them, and simply won't listen to what they have to say. They are simply the puppets senior management wants them to be, either too afraid to make waves or too wimpy, caring instead only about how much time they have left until they can retire. They should be ashamed! Senior management will make an occasional visit, but only seek out those who can "do something" for him and blow past the rest of the group like we're not even there. Speaking for the Company as a whole: longevity and loyalty matter not, letting good, smart workers go and keeping the slugs or hiring inept contractors. They spend more time and $$ coming up with this committee, and that initiative, and this goal or that goal! Their new over budget $450mil computer system was instituted without input from the people actually doing the work, us peons on the bottom, and now makes our jobs difficult & some days impossible to complete (maybe intentionally??). if you are a "yes man" then this is the company for you. If you want respect, and want to be appreciated & heard, then steer clear! If you are management, you are up the creek because nobody will stand up for you, if you are union you're up the creek too, because that's all a political joke as well!

Advice to Senior ManagementI'd give an opinion but I'm not a "yes man" so they wouldn't listen anyway

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company
