Great Place to work!

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Helena, MT

I have been working at National Guard full-time for more than 8 years

Pros- Generally take care of employees
- Secure Employment
- Great benefits
- Good (not great) pay
- Good people to work with

Cons- Federal government bureaucracy
- At times a good old boy network (this is getting better)
- Very defined/military organization structure
- Very difficult to get rid of deadwood (worthless employees)

Advice to Senior Management- Get rid of the deadwood (when possible)
- Trust your good employees and give them the freedom to excel

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Army National Guard

Horizontal Engineer (Former Employee)
Coffeyville, KS

I worked at National Guard part-time for more than a year

ProsThe government pays you to be a soldier, they teach you how to be soldier, which is experience that you will probably never get anywhere else.

ConsWhen the country is not at war, you have many high school graduates with little advanced technical training that need to find motivation. Unfortunately the Army is about maintaining soldiers in a garrison environment, not about making them smarter, or more effective.

Advice to Senior ManagementRecruit and promote talent from within for higher skilled jobs such as engineering, science, and intelligence. Encourage incentives for higher education that will bring out talent that will streamline the Army as a whole. Otherwise the Air Force will continue to get all the nice things.

Not recommended

Captain (Former Employee)
Salem, OR

I worked at National Guard full-time for more than 10 years

ProsYou can chose you own career field. There are opportinuties to be promoted because most are lazy and therefore if you have any sort of direction you can excel past your peers.

ConsPoor leadership, lack of direction. My boss never counseled me or gave me any direction even when I asked.

Advice to Senior ManagementTeach leadership and hold Soldiers accountable. Remove the good ol boy mentality.

Served 6 and 1/2 years in the Missouri National Guard

Sergeant, Squad Leader, Equipment Operator, Instructor (Former Employee)
Carthage, MO

I worked at National Guard as a contractor for more than 5 years

ProsCollege Money, Leadership Opportunities, Lifelong Friendships, Community Engagement, and Worldwide Travel

ConsWhile simultaneously serving and attending college, my grades suffered when other students could study for upcoming exams while I had to go sacrifice that study time to serve the military.

Advice to Senior ManagementWhen enlisted soldiers complete After Action Reviews at the conclusion of military functions, actually read those reviews and provide feedback on why those recommendations can or cannot be implemented.
