I worked at National High Magnetic Field Lab full-time

    Pros

Flat organization, friendly people, great place to work if you're salaried.

    Cons

Some labs take advantage of the OPS position, which is meant to fill short term positions, and not established positions. It's a hire-and-fire-at-will relationship in which the employee receives no benefits except for a mandatory Florida-specific retirement plan. There are employees who have worked there for years, full-time, but have not been moved up to a permanent pay-grade. I find this ridiculous and abusive, as there are plenty of other scientific institutions who are able to provide full benefits to even the lowliest of technicians.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When there's a work climate panel, it's a good idea to separate PI's and management from other employees if you really want to create a full disclosure environment.
