I have been working at National Jewish Health

    Pros

The compensation is constantly being reviewed to stay competitive. The time off and flexibility varies by department but I have never heard anyone complain when trying to get off a little early to go to a kids performance or activity.

    Cons

Leadership can be a little combative when it comes to process improvement. Not a lot of money is spent on training for the employee, but they are working on changing that.

    Cons

Leadership is declining. Lack of support to junior or mid-career investigators. Poor retention strategies. Salaries and benefit tend to be on the lower average.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve the leadership. Improve the research enterprise by providing support and retention of research investigators.

I worked at National Jewish Health full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits - sick days and vacation time adds up quickly, affordable insurance. Great coworkers & they offer in depth training for the position, as well as continued education throughout the year. Distinguished hospital overall & good reputation. Occasional room for promotion.

    Cons

Sitting in a small desk space, on the phone for the full shift was not easy. Difficult job if you don't like talking all day to various people (often grumpy people due to quitting smoking). Very micromanaged, little room for creativity & flexibility of break time or scheduling. Schedules often changed every 3-4 months to allow varying work days/times for everyone. Fast turnover of employees.

I have been working at National Jewish Health full-time

    Pros

It is an easy, low-stress job.

    Cons

It's an easy job - no challenges, and I don't see any interesting work coming down the pike. IT seems to be stuck in the 90's (on a good day), and although there is CONSTANT talk of change, nothing seems to happen. It doesn't feel there is any focus on fixing real problems, there is too much of a "we've always done it this way" mentality - and it goes all the way up the IT chain. All too often problems are ignored until they become critical, then everyone panics and rushes to resolve. The vacation policy is archaic.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hold people accountable for doing their damn jobs. Listen to people you hired to do the work rather than panicking and making knee-jerk reaction decisions.
