I worked at National Oilwell Varco full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Everything seemed okay at first with good benefits, retirement and the like. The management was strong with great projections for the future.

    Cons

Our company was bought then promptly sold off in a matter of a year after much assurance that NOV would never do such a thing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be a little more forthcoming with your new acquisitions and they may trust you a little more.

Former Employee - Pressure Control Group in Houston, TX

I worked at National Oilwell Varco full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Company monopolizes the oil and gas industry which means you will always have a job.

    Cons

Complete lack of ethics, training & accountability. This company is so big it not only bullies other competitors and their suppliers, but also their own employees. It's also not what you know, it's who you know to get anywhere in this company regardless of your contributions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of all the nepotism and hiring of friends and start hiring people that have the right experience and work ethic.

I have been working at National Oilwell Varco full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Stable job situation; low micromanagement; wide range of products and services; Benefits are excellent and Vacation days afforded to new employees is the most I have seen anywhere; Opportunity is there to learn and gain valuable experience in the Oil and Gas Services Industry

    Cons

Working environment is far too political; Salary is below what competitors pay; little opportunity to develop skills and move up in one's career.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider taking more consideration with where employees want to take their careers, instead of putting them on career paths based on what they perceive they would be best in. Strengths analysis is important to determine where an employee will best fit, but there should be more focus as well on where the employee wants to work at.
