I have been working at National Security Technologies full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Excellent work life balance, accommodating with flex time requests and setting own schedule. For the most part insist that you only work 40 hours per week. Coworkers are all great and will look out for you. Lots of opportunity for professional growth if self motivated.

    Cons

Stifling bureaucracy for any type of work. Pay package for employees somewhat disappointing due to government budget woes, but may get better next year.

I have been working at National Security Technologies full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Consistent work, very predictable environment. You get used to the pattern and work flow within the first 90 days of employment. People are generally friendly and willing to work with you on projects.

    Cons

Not much room for discretion and change comes very slowly. Get in good with your managers and supervisors and you'll be a lifer. This may not be the job for everybody as the routine work can quickly stick on even the most vibrant employee.

Moribund executive IT mgt., zero advancement potential, archaic systems, 1960s work environment, average pay.

I worked at National Security Technologies full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Once you get "in" with management you can probably stay there forever if you are a member of a protected class as government contractors will run from a EEOC complaint faster than a hog from a butcher with a sharp knife.

    Cons

Once you do get "in" with management you probably won't advance much unless you go back to college and get a PhD as they manage our nuclear weapon labs and maintenance operations. Physicists, academics and ex-DOD double dippers are at the top of the pecking order and if you want to move above middle management and weren't in the military you will need a doctorate degree. If you just want a job, be ready to work for people that have worked there forever, aren't going anywhere and probably have a bad attitude. A little scary that we entrust the most dangerous substances on the planet, "special nuclear materials," to these folks. And finally, as with most government agencies and contract companies they tend to allocate monies to pet projects with little regard to taxpayers. Have any money left at the end of the year? Spend it on something worthless instead of getting core systems projects, years behind schedule, done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Retire and let someone that wants to improve our readiness, reliability and sustainability take over. Clean out the dead wood in the company. I know that would mean cutting lose half the company but it is for the good of the mission.

    Pros

Ok benefits, lots of PTO accrual, higher base pay for entry level positions

    Cons

no upward mobility, no one ever leaves so nobody gets promoted

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

open up more avenues for cross training in a effort to allow a younger, more energized workforce to get ahead

I worked at National Security Technologies full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

There are many smart people. Many of which have worked at National Labs, the Navy or the DOE. They pay really well from the start.

    Cons

People become complacent and never move up. Most people at the site have had the same job for over 10 years. It is easy to get sucked into the place and just stay where you are. There is also very little advancement opportunities. The average workforce age is well over 40 so they are definitely aging. Also, paperwork is a mess out there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to make sure you mix up the places. The people are stagnant and are becoming lazy at points.

I have been working at National Security Technologies

    Pros

Opportunity to make a difference in challenges facing national security and some VERY interesting work.

    Cons

How the upper management handles the organization is abysmal. There is a small pocket of people who really make a difference yet barriers to their productivity are everywhere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find a way to give back substantial investment in the people and parts of the organization that are really your backbone. The researchers and engineers need the ability to get paid to seek new funding, write white papers, and support business development.

I have been working at National Security Technologies full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

A good place to cut your teeth on technology, but still very limited by shrinking budgets and stodgy limitations on tech.

    Cons

Wireless - nope. iPads or Android - nope and nope. No new tech. Dead-end jobs.
Management talks a good game about leadership development but ALWAYS hires form the outside - no advancement.
Used to be great, but now cutbacks and more cutbacks. Many people now expected to do what 2 or 3 people used to do. 50-60 hours working 6 or 7 days a week - no problem. Just don't expect to get paid for more than 40 hours.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Support your employees and give them career growth and advancement. Actually apply whats taught in the leadership development program. Quit stabbing your people in the back.

I worked at National Security Technologies full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Having worked in other departments and been there quite awhile I had the chance to work with many decent "worker bees". The workers have to stick together and have a comraderie because of the horrible management.

    Cons

I can't begin to describe the despicable, low-down, cowardly, and just plain incompadent management employed at this company. Just save yourself alot of time and trouble and pass on working for this company!! Between the politics (and there is daily politics, and fire brigades-just because they like chaos!!) and the daily change of policies and procedures (just because they thrive on chaos, and management use this to justify always being busy!!) it will drive you to a constant frustration and stress level that is just not worth the pay. And Mangement will remind you of "How well they pay you".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Come out of your ivory tower and see what your management is doing!! Your workers are unhappy with the chaos. If you had the courage and really cared about the workers you would take the time to fix your internal problems. There is management there that are incompetent and lack the basic skills to perform the job-get out from behind your desk and board rooms and talk to your employees!!

    Pros

    Part of a family.
If you like the west coast you should consider a long term career here.
    Good benefits.
Want you to be all that you can rather than only what someone thinks you should be.
You can work with top notch scientists and engineers on extremely cool projects.

    Cons

At the mercy of government budgets.
It is what you make of it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep it up.
